Teacher that the movie Stand and Deliver is based off of passed away
yesterday. If you have never seen the movie it is worth a viewing.
Edward James Olmos does a phenomenal job portraying this teacher.
We have seen this movie done similarly since but I believe this is one
of the best inspirational stories about teachers trying to make a difference
in disadvantaged kids lives.

In like 89 or 90 I was doin horrible in school cuz I was unmotivated, bored and lazy. After report card day in the spring my mom got home, whooped the shit out of me, popped in Stand and Deliver and locked me in my room. Mom asked if I learned anything and I said something along the lines of not really cuz we don't do calculus in school. That almost gave me a slap across the head. Needless to say life isn't a happy movie and I finished the year with a grand total of 49 Fs and flunked 5th grade. Went to summer school, had a conference with the counseler and was passed into 6th grade due to my high Iowa Test scores
