One thing you have to understand is, when thinking about what makes a great manager, George Anderson was one that knew what kind of team he had, and managed accordingly. A true Machine needs all cogs to work, and he knew that he was another cog--even if he had the title of manager. He knew that everyone served their purpose.

Some up and coming managers into this business should probably take note of that. Especially one who has been considered in the big leagues to manage in the city of Chicago, even though he was definitely turned down. He will never be given the name "Sparky" in his career, I would be willing to bet.

A true "spark" happens when all of the cogs work together in a cohesive unit. It's uniformed and perfect. This is truly a sad loss in society, because I'm sure after his managing career, he still served as a "spark" and managed his life the way he managed The Machine.

It truly is devastating to the world of baseball; especially to those certain up and coming managers who could learn a lot from him.

I had no idea he was younger than my dad. He looked older in the 70s than my dad does now.

It's difficult when part of your youth passes on. Unfortunately, it then prompts you to contemplate your own mortality. One less crusty baseball guy in the world and that's not a good thing.

Tommy Lasagna is getting up in age too. Maybe we could have a manager death trilogy. How's Earl Weaver's health?

It was October, 1976. I was eleven (11) years old and The Glorious New York Yankees had been a terrible club my entire life. However, on a heroic walk off home run by Chris Chambliss, they were propelled into their first World Series since my birth, where they faced George "Sparky" Anderson's Big Red Machine. After a humiliating four (4) game sweep, and due to my extreme youthful frustration, I thought that there was no worse human being than Sparky Anderson.

I later came to realize he was a true treasure. Rest in Peace, George "Sparky" Anderson.

This morning on ESPN they had Joe Morgan commenting on old Sparky and the
first thing I thought of was whether or not "our" Joe Morgan had chimed in.
Glad to see he was able to pay his respects here. Nice work as usual.

That's interesting. I contemplate my mortality every single day. I don't think I'll see 50. I could be wrong, but...meh.
