Maybe REM can be on the next Batman soundtrack

If a band hasn't made any relevant music in over 15 years, can't we consider them broken up anyways?

I'm not a big follower of theirs, but have they had anything since "losing my religion" that's either been a hit or had given their faithful fans a hard-on?

While there's nothing about R.E.M. that's ever given me a boner, it seems like the general criteria on this board for greatness is either album sales, ticket sales, or
mass media popularity. Keep in mind, their greatest album, Automatic For the People, came after Losing My Religion (Out Of time). I admit that I kind of lost my R.E.M.
religion in the late 90's. Everything prior to "Up" is a sure bet. Everything since has been very hit or miss.
I think they just played out their contract and wanted to play golf and count their money.
I never saw them live,, but I can't honestly say I'm broken up about the end.
I have the cd's, and I have YouTube.
That said, alot of their music is still very important to me. Just not all of it.

ETA: Bill Berry's departure was the beginning of the end, IMO.

well, that's obvious, shirtless. no question berry was more than just a drummer for that band. and when he left, i will admit my attitude toward the band changed.

honestly, if they'd broken up after "around the sun", i wouldn't have been that affected. they still had a great career and they shaped my adolescence and my musical taste. it seemed like they had nothing left after that.

but then they had to go and make "collapse into now", and suddenly they sounded like themselves again. that's the only reason why i'm kinda mourning the loss. that album showed a lot of signs of life that i thought were long gone.

i only got to see them live once, during their "up" tour but they were outstanding. they went back to the old days and played stuff as old as "cuyahoga" and "pilgrimage". it's a highlight of my life...but i did want to see them live one more time.

THe amount of emails and texts I got from friends/families wondering my state of mind after REM's break-up, you would have thought I lost a child. I was a mega REM fan. I even styled my hair after Stipe (the good and the bad hair cuts. What a tool I was).

Their stuff was just amazing. College rock that went into something great. After New Adventures in Hi-Fi and Berry leaving, the band totally nose dived.

"Up" was a big disappointment. I figured it was the band getting use to no Berry. Well after the train wreck that was Reveal and Around the Sun, I was done with the band. The became lazy songwriters and didn't give a damn.

I listened to Accelerate a year after it came out and was slightly surprised at the positive direction it was going. I haven't even listened to Collapse Into Now. Maybe sometime this weekend I'll pick it up and give it a whirl.

Discoverer is absolutely great, and speaking of discovery, I saw Stipe's penis today.
I got dick-rolled.

I used to play their music when I couldn't fall asleep. What a great remedy for insomnia.

I also thought they were broken up a while ago.

Overrated, big time.
