I heard the stories of the parents racing to the school to check on their kids. that would be horrific.

Oklahoma's KFOR TV station just reported 37 dead, according to the medical examiner.

This shit is absolutely horrible. Death counts keep rising. This is unprecedented for a tornado.

They had the same thing happen 13 years ago. They were supposed to have "safe areas" built in to the new buildings. I heard nobody has a basement because the water level is too high. What a terrible tragedy.

I am pleasantly surprised that I haven't seen any "why don't we ban tornadoes?" jokes by unclever people who believe they are actually making a salient point.

I heard the town had 4 minutes warning. Did this tornado really develop that quickly?? I don't mean to criticize people in the weather field, but a 4 minute warning??

Hasn't mass death been part of the world since the beginning?

it did escalate quickly. I think I heard twelve minutes from warning to touchdown.

CNN is reporting 20 children died thus far.

Clicked on the KFOR link. They have a banner ad for their "tornado shelter giveaway". Not sure how to comment on that... Obviously they need them in that part of the country, but maybe pull that ad for a little bit.

Having elementary aged kids myself, whenever these things happen, whether the shootings or natural disasters, ALL I see in my mind are my kids classrooms and how terrified those kids would be. Gives me chills just picturing it.

Of course it is.

A political blog cherry picking the reaction of a few idiots is a perfect gauge about how the entire country feels about this.

While those are bad, is it any worse than those who immediately wanted to politicize the Connecticut school shooting or the Boston bombing?

Nope. He mentions reactions to those in the article as well.

Just an awful tragedy. Seeing the video on the news, that Oklahoma town looks like it was hit in a war zone. WOW!

By the way, all 3 network dinnertime newscast are going to devote special coverage this eve in the wake of last night's destruction in Oklahoma.

ABC's "World News with Diane Sawyer", "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams" & "The CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley" will be expanded to affiliates starting at 5:30P this eve. ABC in particular will have Diane in New York and weekend anchor David Muir in Oklahoma, while "Nightline" at 11:35P will also devote their show to the tornado's aftermath & recovery.

NBC News will air an hourlong special at 7P benching one of the hours of "The Voice". The special, live from the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, will feature Williams, Lester Holt, Harry Smith, Ann Curry & Kate Snow providing the latest on the aftermath.

Not that it isn't an awful tragedy, but it looks like initial death counts were erronious. They are reporting 24 now, including nine kids.

I have a feeling it's a lot more than a "few". And our elected officials will keep feeding this divisive mindset to ensure re-election.

I'm not real optimistic about this country's future.

Anyway, back to the thread.
