I know the driver, and an aquaintance of the passenger.

Saw this on the news this morning but didn't put 2 and 2 together until stuff started popping up on social media. Horrible.

people have been driving on the lake... didnt think it was that frozen. but i guess its thick enough to crash your car on.

Alcohol was assumed, but the charges were recanted. Tragic situation nonetheless. He's been upgraded to Fair but still in the ICU.

he probably admitted to the cops he was drinking, but was likely under the limit by the time the hospital took his blood.

Some media reports are saying no alcohol, some are reporting that charges are pending but not whether it is DUI related, or a vehicular manslaughter type thing. We won't know until the DA actually announces charges

Well charges have come out. A very cautionary tale. This is still no more or less devastating to her family, I hope he comes out of this on the other end for the better as well. He's got to live with this every day of his life. It's going to be very difficult given the circumstances... I know he is a very resilient person.

One thing that makes me feel a little better about humanity, over $15k has been raised for the daughter of the passenger in less than 2 days.

I made a similar mistake a few months ago, perhaps that's why I've been following this so closely. luckily nobody was injured or killed. Ugh.
