Great Chicagoan Seymour Persky passed away at age 92. He is credited with coining the term "Wrigleyville". He was also responsible for saving the Charnley Mansion at Schiller and Astor. It's now known as the Charnley-Persky House. I was recently there attending a cocktail party for donors, rubbing elbows with architects and big shooters from the Gold Coast.

When I was a kid the Persky family lived right across the street from my grade school, College Hill in Skokie. My friends and I kind of knew Seymour's son Jonathon, but Jonathon went to a Jewish school rather than to College Hill with us. We would sneer at him as a "rich kid". Kids are cruel. One day I pegged him in the face with an icy snowball. I fucked him up. He was bleeding like crazy. I was scared. I rang the doorbell and checked with his mom to make sure he was okay. I'm sure she thought I was an asshole. I was. I still feel bad about it to this day. I found out from the obituary that Jonathon died in 2012.

R.I.P. Mr. Persky. And Jonathon.

Seems fitting that the Ricketts Family consider some kind of recognition for Mr. Persky in some phase of the Wrigleyville expansion?

Edit: Added obit from Tribune.

I don't know about that, but he should at least have a plaque at the corner of Clark and Addison. The real estate agents should all chip in.

I'd work on it myself but I've got my hands full trying to get an historic marker over on Sheffield to commemorate the invention of gyros and one on Northwest Highway to mark the burial place of Star Pointer, the first racehorse to pace a two minute mile.

I didn't know he was on Spada's show. He must have shown him the plans for Wrigley Field.

Poor guy, didn't stand a chance. Like a K.Williams draft pick.

If his exwife wasnt such a twat, Jim Murphy should have a statue in Wrigleyville. He is the one that brought the place back from shitville.

I know it was Rays before that....but Murphy was a cop and encouraged others to open around the park, he saw the vision a lonnngg time ago.

We should all be glad JORR didnt know Murphy and kill him by death of 1000 snowballs before he could influence the others like LOUKAS'S to open bars.

I'm not positive where Jonathon went, but I think it was Arie Crown.

The reason you're not familiar with College Hill is because they tore it down a long time ago. They closed it because there weren't enough kids post-Baby Boom and Walker and Timber Ridge are newer and very close. It was a yeshiva for a few years after it closed and then they sold the land for development. It was between Lincolnwood and Forestview and between Greenwood and Lake.

I see. The local school district did some strange things with the schools in the 70s and 80s--like closing Kenton Elementary and Niles East High School, for instance. They sold off those assets and in subsequent years have had to spend 10 or 15 times the amount they profited on those transactions to build additions to existing schools. Jettisoning land rarely seems to be a good idea for public schools.

Those schools you mention are in Niles Township (obviously). I lived in a borderline area and even though the school was actually in Skokie, it was part of Evanston District 65. There's that weird area some people call "Skevanston" which uses Skokie services (police, fire, etc.) but has an Evanston zip code. I didn't live there but pretty close. A friend of mine called our neighborhood "The Slums of Skokie". There were kids that went to Niles East that lived a block away from me. We knew them to see them, but we never hung out with them. We just never went to school together.

Anyway, there must have been a ton of kids when they built Walker on Church Street. It backs right up to Timber Ridge. College Hill as the oldest of the three I guess was odd man out. It was the prettiest building of the them all.

My dad grew up in an area that has Glenview services and a Northbrook address. I suppose either is better than being considered far-eastern Prospect Heights.
