One of the best racehorses and stallions of the last thirty years. He sired two of my best horses, I Scoot Hanover and Roaring Good Time. I bought a lot of Jate Lobells over the years. In fact, in 1999 my partner and I bought four of them- Idiot Savant, Dangerous Truth, Outofthepast, and Ifalltopieces. None of the four was a very good two year old and that crop nearly put us out of business. We came to call 1999 "The Year of the Shitty Jates". But Roaring Good Time came along the next year and made over half a million bucks for us within four months. And the four from the previous year started bringing in some nice money. Outofthepast is still the best looking colt I ever purchased.

We bought so many of Jate Lobell's sons and daughters, my friend and fellow horse owner, Jimmy Kezios said we were on "the Jate Plan". I ran into Myron Bell, the racing manager for Brittany Farms, down at Southern Oaks Training Center and he asked me, "What is it with you Midwestern guys and Jate Lobell?" I told him they were nice racehorses that could usually be had in our price range. Myron replied, "The problem with Jate is, he's not gonna get you to the altar. He might get you invited to the reception, but he also might take you to the funeral." Roaring Good Time was at least the Maid of Honor.

The second choice in the race was a horse named Taking Sides owned by my friend, Mike Skibicki. I think Taking Sides was 5/2. We still laugh about that every once in awhile.
