Really sad. By all accounts one of the best local prospects in recent memory. Suicide.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/ ... ruit-dies/Charlie Donovan, the 2015 Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year and the centerpiece of Michigan’s recruiting class, died Nov. 5. His funeral will be held Tuesday morning, near his hometown of Westmont, Ill.
Donovan, 18, was drafted in June in the 30th round by the Brewers, but chose to uphold his commitment to Michigan instead of signing. A serious bout of mononucleosis had led him to defer his enrollment in college at least until the spring semester, but coach Erik Bakich was still looking forward to Donovan joining the team and playing shortstop for the Wolverines.
As a senior at Westmont High last spring, Donovan hit .484 with seven home runs, 33 RBIs, 64 runs and 42 stolen bases. He had five-tool potential and earned praise for his athleticism on the diamond. After being drafted, Donovan told mysuburbanlife.com that he wasn’t following the draft and first learned he had been selected from a friend. “It’s cool,” he said. “Even though it wasn’t a high round it’s a good feeling and I’m thankful to the Brewers. It’s definitely something to feel good about, and it kind of represents a lot of the hard work I’ve put in.” Donovan’s death inspired an outpouring of support from many in the baseball community.
