I tried both Honky Tonk and Pork Shoppe around the time they opened. Smoke flavor was not discernible in any of the items I sampled. Maybe they're better now, though. Lillie's Q on North Avenue is supposed to be quite good, especially for pulled pork. I intend to get there soon. I've heard very bad things about the Smoky Bear place Dolphin mentions up thread.

The thing to get at honey1 is the links/tips combo. The ribs are less reliable in my experience, although people say they've improved recently. But I see no need to change my order.

Does the above mean that concubines are especially reliable food critics?

First and simple, if a place is not smoking ribs, they are not to be considered. Sorry! No excpetions! If you think a place has good ribs and they aren't smoked, you just don't have a clue.

Well, I'd agree that those places aren't serving BBQ, but I wouldn't say that necessarily means their ribs aren't good. There's a place in the world for Twin Anchors. It's just a different thing entirely.

Twin Anchors is just a slow cooked rib. The Piggery on Irving does this. The Golden Apple does this. Then they carmelize the sauce on the ribs by throwing it on the grill to warm them up.

I used to like TA, since I started smoking ribs and other items, "I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT"

3. Try the Pork Shoppe on Belmont, you might like it.

POrk Shoppe is AWFUL. Tried it a couple times since its in my neighborhood and its quite bad. Probably the worst collection of sauces I've ever seen at a bbq place. And some of the sides are inedible....raisins in the cole slaw?????

Nope, your first impression on Pork Shoppe is corect, its quite bad.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Lillie's Q despite the write up in Chicago Magazine. People who live in the neighborhood tell me its average at best.

Was this a creamy coleslaw or a vinegar base? I must say I enjoy a little fruit (currant or possibly apple) with a real tangy vinegar based coleslaw. Creamy slaw brings up the mayo issue...I am on record regarding said condiment. Raisins would add an additional level of suck to a creamy slaw IMO.

I was completely unimpressed with Fat Willy's. I'd just as soon save myself the money and eat at the BK across the street. Smokin' Woody's pulled pork sangwich is pretty f'n good, though.
