I agree with Mac.

Callers suck. The smart listeners don't call radio stations. They actually have always sucked. Mac saying they were once good is wrong.

1. Is he saying callers were scripted back in the day?

2. no, in most cases the guys hosting cannot be more interesting than this. Look at the life experiences of the vast majority of on air talent at the Score and find me where the interesting story is generated. Spiegs might have something if he ever actually told a story out of school about the three cover band groupies he got to marry him

I found this site (or a previous incarnation of it, anyway) by hearing Mac mention it on-air. Can't remember which show, but had to be around 2006. I actually emailed him to ask, and he responded pretty quickly! That had me hooked.

Interaction with callers is what made the Score great. That doesn't mean the callers were all good or that they all made great points. The difference is the HOSTS. The successful host back in the day learned how to form relationships with the callers and work with them and make it entertaining and a vital part of the show. Most hosts today don't want to trouble themselves with that - they want all-scripted monologues where they never get questioned or have to be engaged because it is easier, safer, lazy radio. It is also boring as fuck being lectured to about the "smart" way to enjoy sports. the hosts that say taking calls is "bad radio" are hosts that suck at it and have no desire to work at making it fun and accessible. It is bad radio when hosts poorly engage callers and then call them stupid and hang up on them, or act like a disappointed parent when a caller disagrees with the host because they aren't "enlightened" enough to see that you either agree with the host or you are wrong. Almost all of the Score hosts come off as insufferable pricks, and it is absolutely not the listeners fault. Who the fuck would want to hang out with these "too smart for callers" assholes?

It seems like there’s an added benefit of giving the hosts some small breaks so the shows don’t turn into 4hr lectures. And if the host is any good, he (or she!) can riff off the call, whether it’s stupid or not.

That’s like 90% of what made B&B great. The current hosts seem too dense to respond to a human being speaking in his (or her!) direction.

being able to work a call in an entertaining way is a lost art and Boers and Bernstein, who made an entire show based on shitting on their listeners for laughs, started the current trend of looking down on callers and now it is the standard and why sports talk radio on the Score all sounds the same with no entertainment value. "Sports Intellectuals" is horrible radio. It would be nice if one of these guys would start learning the art of hosting a sports call-in show where listeners are treated like idiots and they can have some fun back-and-forth and maybe some non-scripted fun instead of sports lectures.

They used to call running off the caller giving them the WGN shuffle. They just disappear unnoticed while the host speaks.

Blaming the callers as a whole is lazy. Segments like WYC were gold when the producers had the ability to filter out the idiots who didn't understand the essence of the bit.

Is there a podcast?

To those who think Mac is wrong on his opinion concerning the merits of taking callers, why do you think he formulated that opinion? Do you think he's being lazy? Do you think he's become less tolerant of different viewpoints? Do you think he's slowed down mentally? Do you think he's just arrogant?

I happen to agree with him. I don't listen to sports radio for the rambling calls or to hear the hosts make fun of a caller or laugh with one. I suspect there's a reason why very few hosts take calls and it's the reason that Mac gave and not one of the reasons listed above.

I always liked callers, except Elmhurst Steve. He sucked.

It broke up the show, sometimes brought a different thought or good joke. I don't know if it's coincidence or not but I always felt the shows got less interesting the less the audience participated.

Mac also once said on MJH that he wasn't going to have any writers on. I think it was a shot at ESPN corporate at the time. Mac will likely have some select callers as the show finds its footing.

I saw somewhere that he's going to be on George Ofman's podcast. That might be interesting.

Agreed. What percentage of callers actually add to the conversation? Maybe 25%? Plus, too much time is wasted with pleasantries. Let callers text and email and hosts can read anything insightful.
