Thats the reason he took so much shit for the "You couldn't get me out of bed for $300k" statement.

The problem is that just as there's nothing inherently interesting about your driveway story, there's also nothing particularly compelling about the number of monitors Mac has working at Mackeyland on a given night. I really don't give a shit about either. The difference between the two anecdotes, though, is that your story is one of functional consumption whereas Mac apparently needs to constantly signify his social status with his tales of conspicuous consumption. Unfortunately, the unimaginative way in which Mac spends his money just makes him seem boring and shallow. It's not like he's having orgies with pricey hookers and swimming pools filled with champagne or jello pudding, so his mundane forms of fundamentally "suburban" consumption aren't half as interesting as he thinks they are.

Ah, yes, as that immortal band and source of much wisdom, the Monkees, said:

Another Pleasant Valley Sunday
Charcoal burning everywhere
Rows of houses that are all the same
And no one seems to care

See Mrs. Gray shes proud today because her roses are in bloom
Mr. Green hes so serene, hes got a t.v. in every room

Another Pleasant Valley Sunday
Here in status symbol land
Mothers complain about how hard life is
And the kids just dont understand

Creature comfort goals
They only numb my soul and make it hard for me to see
My thoughts all seem to stray, to places far away
I need a change of scenery

Yes. Not at Mackeyland or the Darkside Estats but at three remotes.
I will say that humble better describes Jurko. Sat and talked with us, called me by my real name the 2nd time he met me, and even asked me where my jersey was that I wore the first time I met him. He was just another guy hanging with us. Mac, well, mac and his select few will have a square and talk but I've never got "humble" from him at all. Not that he's the other way, but he's not humble.

Most listeners know Mac through his radio show, not through personal association. His on-air persona certainly cannot be described as humble, but that's true of most, if not all, sports talk hosts.

According to Ed Sherman, it's 200K.

We're talking about his radio show here STU. You're smart enough to know that people are different in person and when behind an internet message board and/or a microphone.
Again, this is not a personal indictment of Mac as a human being. It is criticism of his on air persona.
Also let me stress it isn't a dealbreaker.
I DO like Mac. I hope for the bast for him. I would love to buy the guy a drink and talk some shit. I'm not saying he's a bad guy, I'm saying that this particular facet of his performance doesn't click with me, and with a bunch of his listeners.
STU part of the problem is that I'm just a hippie. I don't put any importance on money or on status or physical posessions. I find any focus on property or belongings and posessions to be distasteful because that's part of my individual personality. I'm what you might call a minimalist.
You're taking this way too hard STU. It's just a critique of the man's performance. You come to one of my shows and tell me I can't sing and I take that as a professional criticism and I'll try to learn from it. Doesn't mean that you think I'm a bad person or a jerkstore. Just means that you didn't like my voice.

Mac has always been cool with me in the times I've hung with him, at remotes and elsewhere.

Darkside, I could care less about you guys having issues with Mac. I'm bored at work (yes, I work) and I just look to be entertained. Mac is a friend and he's got the thickest skin I've ever seen on a human in my life. I just sit here and laugh at you guys and your thoughts about a guy most of you don't know. Have at him and tee him up and some guys will defend and some pile on but I find it funny on both sides.

The fact we all come here to chat about him fuels his ego and Im sure he gets off on it. I honestly think he would do sports radio for free if he had too. Im sure he was laughing all the way to the bank when ESPN was paying him 600k. North was making over a mildo and Mac is a more engaging and talented a guy than Northie will ever be.

Just keep me entertained here as that's what's really important to me .

If he's going to continue with his tales of conspicuous consumption, Mac needs to be more like Al Czervik and less like Judge Smails.

Wow, Darkside, talk about deja vu. I mentioned almost the same thing about Mac in the thread below only 2 or 3 days before he got the boot at ESPN.

http://score670.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=28616

It was an email that I actually sent to the MJH show in the morning and the guys got a bit "touchy" about it briefly on air in reference to it later in the day. After Mac was handed hius walking papers some guys on here joked that I was the reason he got launched. Although that obviously was not the case, the bad economy certainly was, and even though Mac ended up being a casualty of the recession, now that he's back on his feet, his "sensetivity" to the economic plight of others has, it seems, not improved much.

In the end, I guess that's just the way Mac is and always will be - so long as he's on top anyway. I just wonder if he'll get the point when, down the road, his career has gone the way of Chet and North (other former kings of Chicago Sports Radio), and he's hustling for a job. Maybe then he'll understand.

Well good. I'm glad you find this entertaining. So do I.
I hope Mac gets his jollies about people talking about him. I probably would too.
Mac is by far and away the best sports talker on the dial here in Chi (when he's talking sports).
I will also say that when Mac gets under my skin (anyone remember him rooting for the Brew in '07) that it makes for very compelling radio. I listened to every word he said during THAT fiasco. And it WAS very enjoyable, in the way that those damn spinning teacups making me puke is enjoyable. I don't want a host I agree with all the time because I wouldn't learn anything.
So Mackie, when you read my comments, assuming you don't immediately dismiss them, understand that I know this isn't your actual real life personality. It's just comments about the show. I mean, I AM listening, and enjoying.

Funny stuff. I 'll let you guys debate the Mackeyfish persona but I will say and agree with Stu and others about the economy sensitivty things needs to be put on ice already. I have buds who are out of work and they don't sit around feeling sorry for themselves or blame others for having jobs. I've been unemployed before and I agree it sucks but I'm not going to hold a guy who entertains people for 4 hours a day on radio show accountable for the sensitivity of our country's unemployed and don't forget that Mac was unemployed as well so I think he understands that people are out of work and he also pays taxes who help those put food on the table for those who are not working.

I understand we all have opinions and that is what's great about this board.Keep'em coming.

You are both wrong. The subject of the sentence is plural (ubiquity and intensity), not the singular object of the preposition (conspicuous consumption).

For example, it is proper to say "the bag of apples is on the table" because "bag" is the subject of that clause.

If the subject were changed to "bag and box" or "bags," then the verb would also become plural: The bags of apples are on the table.

Let's not let the economy argument derail what should be an valid point, Slappy Ed. That's one minor point in the bigger argument. I'm not unemployed yet and yet I feel that the criticism is valid. that was brought up to encourage one to consider the other extreme of the listeners.
Now, as I type this, Mackie just said he's gonna play golf at Olympia. See, that's not the kind of thing that I am arguing against. I get that. It's nice. No problem.

I thought Mac would be spending this weekend grilling some great meat from Allen Brothers steaks on his green egg while wearing a great comfortable throwback from Triple Threat Sports and watching some great baseball games on his 63" HDTV 1080p flat panel that he got fron the Little Guys. It's nice to see he is getting out and enjoying the weather.

Thing is, he's probably putting some sort of sauce on that fine piece of meat...there's my only gripe with it...

The bags of apples are on the table.

Bag/bags is the subject, not the object of the preposition.

So when you have a compound (plural) subject (ubiquity AND intensity), a plural verb is required. Grammar lesson over.

I'll let you guys debate the other points DS. I have no opinion on the other debate as knowing Danny on a personal level he has never 'EVER" Come off that way to me and I agree with Stu that it's show content and it's said in jest and as a joke most times.

We all share cool things we get to do as golfing at Olympia Fields or getting to take BP at Wrigley or skating with the Wings or meeting the guys in the band Wilco. I love to hear that stuff and what other people get to do.

Both of us are from a lower middle class up bringing and guys like me and Mac have had battles with demons over the years and scratched and clawed to become suceessful husbands, fathers and businessmen and I won't fault the guy for sharing any of his llifes successes with his listeners. He also shares his failures as well with his audiences which most people would rather here about anyway.

This is a fun thread to read. To follow up on something Gloopan wrote, I'd be elated if only 10% of the people I knew considered me to be a jackass. Shit, I think 10% of the people who knew Mother Teresa thought she was a pushy bitch.
