I think the contemporary version for that term would happen to be African American Homosexual.

As has been mentioned by MANY, real basketball fans understood that B&G didn't know what the hell they were talking about. That's why they didn't listen in addition to all of the tiring political topics. They often took a popular stance and beat it into the ground to the point you wanted to take the opposite POV.

Sure, and you see in that parody that CH posted above (And I'm not sure it's a parody, it could be a transcript.) what Boers brought to the table that Jason could not.

NBA talk on the radio has never really gotten the show threads going here. NBA fandom is weird. There is a deadspin post today about Lebron NOT dunking because he was fouled and how awesome that dunk would have been had he not been fouled and how he even knew that it was going to be awesome and was mad at the ref for calling a foul because that ref denied the world a chance to see his dunk(not joking either).

I think B&G tried to bring that type of talk to the radio and it just doesn't work because it sounds silly and stupid to act like some golden age of basketball exists because Jaylen Brown hit a good shot at the end of the game against the Utah Jazz(the other deadspin article from last night/this morning).

Don't get me wrong, I'll watch Iowa vs. Northwestern in football or basketball but I don't think we've reached some transcendental sports moment because there was a good play in the game.

The Juxtaposition between content and talent is what i find interesting. Was it NBA talk per se or was that the NBA talk was bad at it. I grant that weren't good at it but the argument has always been about content.

NBA talk in of itself was the turnoff. Instant PTFB

As the great Douchebag posted "all the usual suspects" were out to tell the world just how much they hate the dreaded NBA. During the damn Finals no less.

The type of fawning over the NBA and particular NBA players as described by BRick above has become a type of virtue signalling that denotes one as being on "the right side of history". I doubt that the racist Score listener you are discussing is actually consciously aware of that, but he can certainly feel it.

They weren't good at it. I love the NBA but they wouldn't be nowhere near go to guys for me with regards to hoopstalk.

Their idea of basketball talk was simply to fawn all over Lebron James. That gets old after awhile.

Chicago has always been weak on Basketball talk. I really don't know what would happen if they ever made a concerted effort to broadcast about it. They might find that they could change and grow their demo.

I stopped listening because i tired of listening to football talk. It soured me on Football too. One of the articles that i cited earlier made reference to an oversaturation of media with respect to football coverage. The decline in ratings was based in part on this oversaturation of media.

Apparently i'm not alone in this thinking. The return of McNeil promises a return to that. There is going to many references to how he hates football. PTFB. yadda yadda. Off Season football talk is boring as shit. Regardless of what people on here state it is.

The NBA is the fastest growing sport in this country and their athletes are the most recognizable. There is no way that the score will be able to grow as a station if they continue to ignore this.

One show can be bad at national NBA talk. Every show can't be bad at national NBA talk or it's possible it just isn't that interesting. You've been touting W&S and M&H and how they talk national NBA talk and yet they aren't good enough for you either.

If you don't listen to sports radio then you probably aren't a good judge of what interesting topics are on sports radio.

I never got social conscious basketball talk when i listened to them. If they thought they were being progressive by discussing basketball it might have been relative to previous radio shows. They'd be right. The only full time guy that ever had an inkling about basketball was Terry Boers. Van Lier but he wasn't on that long. North didn't really know shit. Jiggetts, Murphy, Mac, nope.

I'm referencing the old time guys. In that respect they were an upgrade but its mostly the tallest midget award.

Yes, and this is kind of weird and complicated. Of course you're right that there are racist listeners. But it's like that scene in Do The Right Thing where Mookie is asking Pino about his favorite musicians and athletes and they're black. There are many racists in Chicago who would punch you in the face if you said someone other than Michael Jordan was the greatest player of all time. For those guys, the LeBron talk was offensive. And like I said, I doubt they're aware that the NBA and LeBron in particular have come to symbolize a certain type of political philosophy to a point where LeBron is not just the world's greatest basketball player but we are also supposed to believe that if he concentrated on it LeBron could cure cancer or provide world peace.

Are the guys that never watch basketball the best ones to say whether the talk is good or bad? Why are they go to guys on this stuff. The guys that complain about it are mostly the guys that hate basketball yet their opinion is considered gospel round these here parts.

Now you're hitting the real issue. It's really not so much race as it is age. You and I are old guys. We're the listener. bernstein and Goff tried to gear a show to younger people who are probably less inclined to be listening to terrestrial radio.

I will provide one specifically. Elmhurst Steve. Elmhurst Steve knows basketball. Its obvious that he watches the games. He has sound opinions from the little i've read of him.

I don't know about that. All I know is that a guy who loves basketball, and has even mentioned two shows who do well talking basketball, doesn't listen to either of those shows.

You should be the perfect listener for a supposedly NBA heavy show. You aren't listening.

Maybe they were trying to be cutting edge. Gearing your station to a market geared towards old white guys isn't a winning strategy.

The demographic breakdown of this city is a 3rd black, 3rd Hispanic, 3rd white. The Score has been stuck in a ratings quagmire for about 20+ years. Blacks in Chicago love sports love basketball. The Score has never made a concerted effort until Goff to appeal to them. They might grow their base if they make an attempt to appeal to them.

Why would i listen when the talk is bad? I used to listen to sports talk radio a lot and i frankly stopped listening because of stupid shit like OBJ in March.

Basketball talk in of itself isn't a panacea. It still has to be good. There discussions were not.

I watch TV and read the internet for my basketball information. I find that they are simply better at it.

I don't know what the answer is. It's similar to horse racing. Your core audience is dying off and you're not really replacing them. Do you make changes that will alienate your remaining core when there is no guarantee you will get the new customers to whom you are attempting to appeal? Guys like Jimmy deCastro get big bucks to figure that shit out. But it may just be as simple as horse racing is a dying sport and terrestrial radio is a dying medium.

Well, there is a lot of good football talk across multiple shows that gets me to listen. Maybe that explains why football gets talked about more than basketball.

It is. If they are going to have any chance they will have to find a way to change with the times. The gulf in demographic composition between Baseball, Football, and basketball should be alarming. I'm speaking in terms of avg age.

I watch TV and read the internet for my basketball information. I find that they are simply better at it.
Well, there is a lot of good football talk across multiple shows that gets me to listen. Maybe that explains why football gets talked about more than basketball.

Again not in the offseason. McNeil is going to run a football centric show up until the start of the season if you are fine with that so be it. I love basketball but i would never want to discuss it non stop when games aren't played. The brief period in July i.e. free agency summer league. Once that is over i'm disinterested for the most part.

Football should never supersede Hoops or Baseball during this time of year.

Yeah because the hosts aren't particularly good at it. I agree. If they found some that were i'd listen more.

No, in the offseason too is fine for NFL talk. There is a reason that I listen to sports radio and you don't and I have as shows have come and gone and you have never found a show that does "good" NBA talk.

1. The WSCR signal covers most of Illinois, not just the city.

2. They DID try to appeal to a different demo, and they did it for over a year. It was a failure. Their listener base shrunk relative to the competition.

The type of fawning over the NBA and particular NBA players as described by BRick above has become a type of virtue signalling that denotes one as being on "the right side of history". I doubt that the racist Score listener you are discussing is actually consciously aware of that, but he can certainly feel it.

Now you're hitting the real issue. It's really not so much race as it is age. You and I are old guys. We're the listener. bernstein and Goff tried to gear a show to younger people who are probably less inclined to be listening to terrestrial radio.

Thanks for coming around to the point that was made 14 pages ago.
