Quote:
As the glee gently took hold in the locker room and spilled into the hallway outside, I spoke to Curry and most of his family — his father, the 16-year NBA veteran Dell, his enchanting mother Sonya, his brother and current NBA player Seth, and his resourceful wife Ayesha. I discussed with them a wide range of issues — faith, fatherhood, feminism, and family values — seeking to gauge how they affect Curry and his loved ones.

Yeah, just a shame they're all not black enough.

Quote:
Second, “ ‘hood” in the coded speech of black identity means “real.” Durant channels what passes for common sense among many blacks: that a “real” black may be the darker one, and the lighter black is suspect and inauthentic because his or her skin reflects symbolic, if not literal, ties to the white world. There would be no light skin if there weren’t white skin in the game — either through the raping of black women on slave plantations, or in less-volatile relations between black men and white women.

There's a nugget of reality in there, but it's funny how their (Steph & Klay) status as rich (former)kids & second generation NBA players is almost completely glossed over. Kind of like how Jalen Rose hated Grant Hill for what he was, until he realized that it was just his own jealousies causing him the problems(Edit: for what he perceived himself not to be).

And Grant Hill actually had the stereotypical "city" game.

Still, the comments of both stars reveal a third suppressed premise of race: that light-skinned players have different — read lesser — athletic ability, the reason in part that Durant and Iverson were both surprised by Curry’s skills.

This is a dangerous road to go down. Obviously, given the history and the numbers, it's not quite the same as saying lighter or whiter people are more capable than darker ones in other endeavors. But this type of thing simply reinforces the racist's belief that there are inherent differences based on skin color, e.g. black people are great at sports and dancing, but you need a white guy to run your company.

I am of the belief that it's impossible for a black person in America to be a racist given the history and established structures of the U.S., but you can see that racism isn't simply some inherent failing of white people (believing that it is is racism in its own right), as, when given the opportunity, blacks can clearly be just as racist. That's illustrated very clearly in a micro-society like the NBA.

If Goff mocked and belittled light-skinned black people at just about any other station in the country, he'd be fired. At the SCORE, it's allowed.

And Goff loves to point out racism by white people. But, for some reason, in his mind, it's OK to be racist against light-skinned black people.

Does this "protection" extend to discrimination? As in, can a black guy consciously not hire white people for his business and not be shamed/condemned/litigated for it, or does that somehow not make him a racist?

I don't really understand what you mean by "protection". We're not writing law here. It only makes him a racist if he's not hiring the white guy because he believes there is some inherent defect in the white guy that makes him a lesser employee. You seem to be confusing and/or conflating prejudice and racism. Many people do.

Maybe it's easier to understand it this way. I have a business partner who is doing 60 years in Menard. He told me he never understood what racism was until he got in there. A place where's he is the minority and all customs, unwritten rules, and structures are not designed for his benefit. Within that environment he couldn't possibly believe he was superior to a black man. Obviously, on the outside it's reversed.

What's that book that bernstein discovered that gave him support for his barely hidden racist beliefs? I'm sure Curious Hair knows.

Ah, OK, didn't know you were operating under the classical definition of "racism", instead of the more colloquial usage, whereby the term is inclusive of prejudicial thoughts and actions.

No, the book looks at people of different races and came to a conclusion that perhaps, for example, Nigerians are predisposed to be great distance runners. bernstein was in love with it for awhile. I can't think of the name of the book or the author. I want to say maybe David something.

If Dan Bernstein inadvertently endorsed a Steve Sailer tract, that'd be pretty funny.

Was it The Sports Gene, by David Epstein?

As it turns out, the book did get a glowing review from Steve Sailer.

Oh man, there's a line in that older thread that caught my eye for its WTF-ness, so I searched the board and sure enough, Dan once posited that Venezuelan ballplayers get too fat because they're not black enough and instead have "Incan-Mayan bloodlines" that make them fat.

Absolutely a black person can be racist. And I'm fine with that. I think black people should be allowed to be racist against white people if they want. And nobody should bitch or complain about it. Least of all, dumb ass white people. We are a horrible race that should be hated.

But, I do think it's wrong for Goff to be racist against what he considers to be the wrong type of black person. So I'm sticking up for all light-skinned brothers!!!!! Screw you, Goff. #Lightskinbrothersmatter

Naught "classical" about it. Invented by academics in the 90s who seem unable to understand social class.
