What does Mac do better—as a radio host—than Spiegel?

I know Spiegs gets a lot of shit on this board, and by no means am I contending that he doesn’t have shortcomings, but Mac is nothing special these days.

What are Mac’s greatest traits/contributions to a radio show in 2018?

Mac relates well to the common man. He comes off as genuine.

We are about 2 weeks away from the time of year that Mac truly shines.

If that’s the first thing that came to your mind, it proves my point. Coming off as genuine does not make for compelling sports radio in 2018.

He’s noticeably less interesting since he returned full time to the score. Hell, his short lived podcast early in the year was a far better version of himself that the current version

He's much better at making people laugh

But what specifically makes his views on football so unique or interesting

It doesn't matter, his views on football draw ears, heck apparently his views on baseball do as well given how the ratings improved once he took over the afternoon show.

At the end of the day, his personality just draws listeners as it isn't offputting as B&G were.

Yeah sorry to not be able to give whoever that poster is more quantifiable things but it just is. Mac is simply all of the things mentioned and more packed into a listenable, fun persona. Are there smarter? Yes. More universally well read on all sports? Sure. Those people are not always good at communication in this format.

Mac has his issues but he is a top notch Chicago broadcaster when his personal issues are in check. Lucky for us they have been.

As for Spiegs, he was simply odd man out. Some have arguments against him but for me those are mostly based on things in his first year or two. He is simply a professional broadcaster but not a top guy.

Yes, are you new to the basics of media business?

Radio is a business so the only thing that matters is the people listening so that the sales team can sell time on the station to paid advertisers.

It's not rocket science. You entertain people, you get ratings, you keep your job. Look at Scott Ferrall. That guy's been in the business for like 20 + years and he's missing half of his brain. Fact

Spiegs and Hanley disagree.

Clearly you do not understand why Mac has a job when the answer is clear to anyone who has a brain.

Go subscribe to Sirius if you want to jack off to Goff's voice

I asked what makes the current incarnation of Mac better than Spiegel. Saying “look at the ratings” makes no sense.

I’m not interested in who gets more ratings in this particular discussion.

Those are tricky. There are businesses or situations though where performance is just fine. But it just is believed by management it should be a lot better.

You asked what does Mac do better. You were given a correct answer. If that isn't good enough for you, then ask better or different questions.

It has been made clear for you already. Here and other places on the board there are generally negative comments about Spiegs and positive about Mac. It is simple as that. Mac appeals to more people's listening tastes than Spiegs does.

Mac is a HOF radio personality. Gets ratings.

Spiegs, when all is said and done, will have an incredible resume and is also a terrific listen. He knows his shit and has more than enough individuality and strength of personality that he doesn't get swallowed up by his co-host.

I've always liked both.

It's that simple. I don't know what kind of answer you are looking for. The majority of sports talk show listeners want someone they can relate to and they don't want to be talked down to. Spiegel, Bernstein, and Goff do not have the appeal to the everyday, working stiff that Mac has. Look at Mully and Hanley- that was a boring-ass show that did great in the ratings. Mully and Haugh will do the same. Personally, I prefer Spiegel paired with Parkins instead of Mac and Parkins but both shows are high quality.

Not one clear specific example of what Mac does well presently.

Just a circle jerk of narrative regurgitation

What kind of answer are you looking for? People like Mac and he gets ratings. Are you looking for someone to quantify why that's the case? They just do.

Mac is better at utilizing i.e. exploiting this message board. That's why people on here like him. Don't think there really was a discernible difference in the ratings either. Goff had higher ratings than Mac for the same period last year and Mac's bump from Goff's last book was mostly due to the broadcasting of Cubs games.

Its why they hired him in March. Mac used to be good but he is only interested in sports during football season. Spiegel is much more well rounded and knowledgable about sports than Mac happens to be.
