Nice reminiscing by Mac, with some cool sound bites from 27 years ago.

First lineup:
Tom Shaer
North and Jiggetts
Dan McNeil with Brian Hanley and Terry Boers
(Murphy on weekends but he wasn’t in the promo they played)

Mac said he worked at the station around four months prior to launch, interviewing producers such as Jud Sirott, Jesse Rogers and Shaky Suntries. And when they started, their worst relationship was with the Cubs, who refused to come on air because Mac called Mark Grace a drunk.

At the time there was no thought to airing games because the signal cut out at sunset. Hence the station’s mission statement of “fans talking to fans,” not as a mouthpiece for the teams’ owners.

Was it today’s show? Which hour?

Sad to see what the station has become.

Those were the days.

They sure were.

I heard him say Steve Stone said the station makes him want to puke. How many checks for weekly appearances did he cash after that?

Stone, Hub and Levine were all critics.

The print media were vocal critics of the entire format

I don't think the Score has raised itself over the years but instead print media has lowered itself and they are now on equal footing.

I was surprised to hear on crosstalk that Bernstein started only after about five years into operations beginning. I would have sworn it was at least a decade.

He was the fish out of water when he came to the station. His reign of terror as the face of the station almost had to occur as the antithesis to North's exaggerated thesis. I am glad those days are over but I can't help but feel sad that we cannot return to that golden era where Monsters and HFC ruled

It wasn't just fans talking to fans. It was friends talking to friends. I know I may gullible but it was fun to hear the host's stories of hanging out with each other on weekends and hanging out with listeners not because they were forced but because they genuinely wanted to. North may be a huckster but that guy actually invited listeners to his house to hang out as a Score promotion. Do you think anyone from the "smart radio" era would do that? Would there be any listeners who would want to hang out with the hosts for that matter?

I like where the Score is at right now. Sure it could be better but the evolution of the past year has at least partially refocused them.

Yep. Bernsie was the try hard dork. Also besides Shaer way too professional for the place.

Sir summed up the state of the Score during the "smart radio" years yesterday as part of transition. He said he wasn't sure he wanted to do a NYE night show but he felt obligated. He refused to take calls because it was NYE night?

That is exactly the time you do want to take calls. People are running on Bears meatball and booze and you don't want that on the air? Do you not understand you are in the entertainment industry?

Several years ago Bernstein and Leery patted each other on the back for "making Bears fans smarter."

Pedantically using the term "mesh point" has enriched us all.

I didn't listen in the 90's, so I won't offer any comments about that era. I started listening around 2002, and I must say The Score is better now than it was then. It really turned a corner around 2008 and 2009 when it ditched Hampton, Murph, and North, before that, 1000 was actually the better station.

It makes guys like Bernstein and Leery think they're impressing players and coaches by using those terms during interviews. IMO it's similar to reading WebMD and thinking you're impressing the doctor or the nurse by regurgitating a word salad of medical terms.

‘Fans talking with fans’ was Murphs moniker when we was on WLS.

The score never used that in the early days except Murph.

Maybe by saying that Mac as acknowledging Murph in an indirect way to give him some credit. Murph was there day 1 as well.

This current score is nothing like the early days. The early score was more lively with constant guests, interesting phone calls, hot topics of debate, and funny bits, brutal attacks on floundering teams. The borng ala m & p, b & m random, pointless chit chat for full segments would be rare. Turning the score off for pure boredom was rare like today. The early score took pride on not beiing saddled broadcasting teams to be able to speak frerly
. When they did get the Sox Mac bitched and moaned constantly about getting his show cut. Nobody was fearful of crossing the PC line and ignored other hosts like they do today with poison wacko Julie. The female hosts were highly respected and valued unlike Julie. Lots of good memories when the score use to rock.
