Steve Dahl had some great funny stories.

Chet could announce two 7 years olds playing checkers and make it sound like Ali-Frazier.

One time he had Bill Walton on an early sat am on ESPN and I swear to God, Chet's intro and Walton's response to it took up 80% of the segment.

It's 6:02 PM; Ryne's on hold on line 1, and Dahl won't give up the studio because he is telling some story of how his wife is pissed off at him. Chet and Mac are going beet red in the face and pacing around the hallway, talking about how unprofessional the lead-in show is. I don't know if that is a real anecdote, but it sounds like it would be one.

IMO, it really turned into liberal-fag radio around 2010-2011 I blame Goff and Drinky for enabling Bernstein to talk politics. That was the downfall.

There was one time where Dahl messed with Chet's mic resulting in the first 15 minutes of Chet's show being in a high pitched voice.

My favorite was when Ditka had his heart attack and Dahl and Meier made fun of it and Chet came on and got scolded by that chubby little special teams coach.

Jorr, you have to have a few Chet stories. Any that you can share with the group?

I didn't really know Chet. I crossed paths with him at the Evanston-New Trier football game a time or two. One time he was wearing a ridiculous fur coat.

My friend Jimmy is taking Chet's death really hard. Jimmy is a radio legend in his own right and he and Chet worked together back at the old WMAQ.

They used to play a clip on the Loop of him interviewing Tommy LaSorda while eating a Cobb salad.

Dahl invented the term "boyquarium" to describe Chet and his production team sitting behind the glass

Yeah Dahl and Garry would fuck with him constantly. It was good natured in a sense though. They did it with Grobber and Lujack too.

His wife is probably trying to find another partner for him to alienate.

So weird. That dude during that era on Rush was able to do as he wished. How all the sudden he set things in motion with that marriage is odd. Never know. Loneliness? Scared of AIDS back then?

 No, I didn't even see that.

My friend Jimmy is a legend in radio sales. He wanted to create an all-sports station in the early 80s and the honchos at WMAQ found the idea that such a thing could be successful absurd. Jimmy is very upset about Chet.

Bruce Wolf did a "Chet Chit-Chat" bit that I always thought was better than the actual Coppock.

This said, Coppock was a pioneer. He was the first guy I remember who did a sports talk radio show in Chicago. I didn't like him and didn't listen to him much, but I certainly knew about him. Came across as an egomaniac, which I didn't get at all, given that his show was relegated to after drive time.

Anyway, RIP, Chet. You were ahead of your time.

He was on WCPT with Joan Esposito recently. He’s still doing a daily podcast and claims to be doing ok financially...I think he’s in California these days.

Even if he had never saved a penny, his wife made enough that they'd still be comfortably retired.

True but I meant he implied that the podcast was profitable.
