Since the debut of MJH (moment of silence... thank you) I've been reading your thoughts and listening to opinions everywhere I go... on the three-man booth.

I still believe it can be an asset... but it requires a very, very patient third guy. Sometimes the pregnant pause is necessary. Dahl and Meier were the best at letting a thought "breathe" and weren't afraid of "dead air." Dead air can be a most effective tool. B&B do it well. That's how people in groups communicate. When you sit around with your friends, nobody feels there has to be conversation that never pauses. Again, the trick is finding the person who's content to be third.

The three-man booth is a bit busy, I agree. Sometimes it's way too much. Sensory overload. How does that get solved? The first two guys have to be very engaged (and engaging) and the third guy needs to understand he doesn't have to comment on everything. Or, when the third guy gets on a roll, the second guy needs to be patient and back off a bit. Jurko was good at that. He never felt like his voice constantly needed to be heard.

Something Howard Stern's show has done very well over the years is work many voices in without it sounding too busy. It's a sizable on-air fraternity, but there isn't a battle for mic time.

So what do I want to do next if I'm in a position to make the call? It all depends on the "players." I'd love a strong second... and a patient third (or a smartass producer who knows when it's a good time to open the mic and chip in).

If by chance you are just looking for a smartass, there are plenty to choose from on this board. On the other hand, Harry was / is a dumbass.

Danny,

The only problem I foresee is finding out if that chemistry exists on air. I suppose you can do as much prep work and practice as humanly possible, but until it debuts in a "live" format, it's just a toss-up as to whether that on air chemistry is going to exist or not.

I'm hoping it works for you.

BTW - did North almost catch you giving away info about where you were going to be working next?

I'll hang up and listen for my answer.

No, I don't know how that perception got out. There was no way I was going to tell him anything about "clubhouse leaders" in my job search... but I don't blame him for trying.

How many hours before his first suspension on that douchebag show?? This has not been thrown out there but Dahl is looking for work and is a sports fan and Sox fan and those two together would be appointment radio but could the egos co-exsist?

I'm not sure who said it at the time but when MJH was about to debut, the listeners were told the show was going to be kind of like the Seinfeld show. Fans of that television show enjoyed the supporting cast more than Jerry Seinfeld himself. I've never heard any listeners or readers say they enjoyed a certain thick, failed "actor" who recently fell off a horse. How and why did you ever agree to create a show with such a weak link?

Good luck on your next radio show. Hopefully you select a wise partner and/or good third wheel, team player.

Mac, I never really thought about it but I totally agree with your point about the value of silence. It can be a valuable beat in the rhythm of a show. Now that you mention it, I think that is one of the problems I've always had with a 3 man booth/show. I hope you stick to the 2 person show / occasional contributor dynamic you mentioned.

I'm with Irish Boy. Rush stands alone in terms of producing the most energy from just a three-man weave. My 14-year-old son/drummer has taken to them... largely because of skinsman/percussionist Neil Peart.

I don't like Rush, and I'm not denying that all 3 are brilliant musicians, but in terms of "Best 3 man band", Cream should be at the top of each and every such list.

I'm glad to not see Nirvana in this thread.

I don't particularly like Rush either, but I don't think there can be any denying their place at the top of the list. I used to hate them but they've grown on me a little bit.
