Dan McNeil returning to The Score radio with 'Danny Mac Show' Comments June 3, 2009 BY LEWIS LAZARE Media and Marketing Columnist Dan McNeil, considered by many observers to be one of Chicago’s — and the nation’s — best radio sports talkers, is returning to CBS Radio’s sports/talk WSCR-AM (670). Starting June 15, McNeil will be the solo host of the new “Danny Mac Show” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. “I’ve been in ‘training camp’ for this for more than four months,” said McNeil in a statement, adding “this is a chance to win in a brand new day part for me and in a slot that has become more meaningful.” McNeil previously was at WSCR, familiarly known as “The Score,” for some nine years until he jumped to sports talk competitor ESPN Radio’s WMVP-AM (1000) in the year 2000. But WMVP opted not to pick up the last year of his latest contract, which reportedly paid him in excess of $600,000 a year, and McNeil departed WMVP in January. Sources said that, per the terms of McNeil’s contract with WMVP, the sports talker was only permitted to begin talking to competing stations about a new radio gig within the past 30 days. The “Mully and Hanley Show,” with Sun-Times writers Mike Mulligan and Brian Hanley, which now airs from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., will lose an hour, and the “Boers and Bernstein” show will add an hour, beginning at 1 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. McNeil also will contribute to the first half-hour of “Boers and Bernstein” under the new arrangement. Listening now for 11 minutes,like the fact Danny said he does not want to interview "some" athletes. Terry & Murph feud ongoing since '96? Did not know that. Boers makes crack about falling off a horse. That's about it. Good Luck to Danny Mac & his 12,000 dollar boat (sorry,can't let it go)! |

Sure, a partner would be better, but a partner costs $$$'s, doubt Mac was willing to give up the extra dough to have another voice in the booth. Seems like WSCR is content with delivering an interior product and being #2 to WMVP--as long as the station stays on the air, it's all good. |

I called it. I knew Mac was gonna be going head to head against Waddle & Silvy. Mac as a Protagonist without an Antagonist may be Very Bland! Will Jurko Ship Out to The Score Too? HMMM? Murph & L. Holmes would be Good together. Hampton should only be a NFL/Bears Guest |

All I can say is... FINALLY!!! My ride home will still suck but at work I'll have Mac back. CJH gets listeners because if you're not in on the Score jokes you can't listen. So if you want sports in the afternoon you have no where to go. I've tried for months to find decent radio for the ride home and it's devoid of anything that is worth listening. I went back to CJH just to listen to Bruce, AJ and a couple of other guests. ESPN1000 has a brand now and that's it. Anyone that gave the station a pulse is gone. I can't believe I'm typing this but I even miss Hoody and Chet. Silvy this morning was just a moron, "You can't count on Zambrano!" Seriously wtf is he talking about? He gets tossed from a game in May and you can't count on him? Please stop trying to create a story and just report one and be funny about it along the way. Mac doing 'Me' shows were something he said he wasn't fond of and Jurko wants to see his kids in the afternoon, maybe Jurko is coming along after all. ESPN will stop getting my time if CJH goes to just C&H. Harry is a moron, he never saw that Mac saved him from himself. Oh well... Mac's back! I'm so excited radio gets interesting again!

I'm just happy Mac is finally on the radio again. It's been too long. Now he can talk some Cubs/Sox crosstown stuff - and he'll be in Bourbonais. Thanks Mitch Rosen and Rod Zimmerman! I also wish the best for Murph and Laurence who I feel are both talented and have their fan base. |

Mac by himself? He will have a partner by the end of the year. Can't imagine him being very good alone. Maybe I am wrong, but it will definitely be better than the Mully/Hanley bore fest and the Holmes/Hampton stuttering bumbiling fest. |

Been away a while but was glad to see that Danny Mac is back where it all started. I think it will probably be Danny and Drinky - that would make sense as to why they were talking so much when Dan filled in for Terry two weeks back. I don't think Danny will pair up with Jurko again. I think he likes Jurko but I just have a feeling Danny wants to start new with different partners and different dynamics. I think that may keep the chemistry fresh. |
