Speaking as someone who has had to "take" unemployment, should I say something classy like "I hope you get laid off?" Then you can judge whether or not you are simply "taking" money. Sure. Some people abuse the system, but fuck off for your generalizations. |

Yes, my wife was 2 months pregnant with our second child when it happened to me. I was lucky (long time ago) & found another job in a few months. Still, I make jokes, because that's what I do! |

No, it's not a good point; the both of you are demonstrably fucking stupid. Except for certain persons in certain unions (e.g., teachers), everyone pays into the unemployment fund. If this guy was drawing from unemployment, he's (likely) mostly taking out what he put in to begin with. Let the record show (not that it should matter): (a) I'm not a Sox fan; (b) I am not, nor have I ever been, on unemployment; (c) I don't believe I make a great deal more than $18k (net); (d) I have a couple of close family members on unemployment that they more than put into the pool for the time they (hopefully) will draw from it; and (e) it sure beats the hell out of them otherwise facing being displaced from their respective domiciles. I'd continue, but I'd clearly be wasting my time with dopes like the two of you. Next time, try not to so adeptly show your lack of intelligence. |

Exactly. You have to "make" at one point in order to get on unemployment. And presumeably, he was laid off and not fired. Its very likely that he did "make" more than $18K, and definetly made more than DDD does working the streetcorners. |

Another stupid thread by uninformed people. When I lost my job two years ago, I had no problem in collecting unemployment since I had worked the last 20 years contributing into it. Luckily I found a job within 2 months, but if the economy doesn't turn around soon and I lose my job again, I will have no problem drawing from unemployment since it was my ass working that put the money in there in the first place. You want to take a shot at people on welfare - I don't have as much a problem with that - but people that have lost their job in this economy - well it's a lot more common than you think - We will see how much pride you have if God forbid, you lose your job - we'll see if your attitude changes then. |

Unlike welfare, unemployment benefits are funded by businesses, not the individuals who work for said businesses. It is a tax they pay based on the number of employees they have and the number of claims those employees make during a specific time frame. Unlike welfare, unemployment runs out after 26 weeks. It can be extended up to 52 weeks if necessary. Unlike welfare, unemployment requires you to submit proof that you are looking for a job. Unlike welfare, unemployment helps you return to self-sufficiency. |

I had no qualms about collecting a couple weeks of unemployment earlier this year...it let me take my trip to Chicago to sit in a hotel for three days... On second thought, I probably would have been better off just working... |
