Thanks for playing those Pappy carts today. It certainly brought me back to a time when the Monster's could do no wrong. They had lot's of interaction with their fans both on the show and off hours. I don't know when it changed. Originally it was Mike who embraced his fan base while the HFC were a bit standoffish. I wonder if there was any single event that changed that for Mike.

Anyway, it gets tedious reading people hate Mike, as if he never was the face of the SCORE in its most glorious years. The bits helped me remember.

People here are forgetful, or sometimes just don't know certain things. Unless it happened in the last 2-3 years :-)

While I respected North's ability, I never really liked the North personality much. In terms of "jumping the shark," he used to claim he knew more about the black man's plight than the callers. This toned down to knowing more Black History... Jiggs should have just eviscerated him then and there -- it was ovah!

Us "haters" mostly get a raw deal here. I may well be the biggest but believe it or not, I liked North the first year or so. He was refreshing and different. One of the guys if you will. I was a Scorehead since day one and I heard the transformation happen. The Score got more popular and Norths edgyness got noticed. But what most missed especially in the media is the lack of preparation and the flat out lies. I would have SportsCenter on with no sound and actually hear North talking about a subject they were just showing. He would get guests on from a highlight that was on. He had a player from a college basketball team that made a spectacular play and was highlitedon ESPN. North bragged about "this kid that no one knows about". Taking credit. "THE BULLS SHOULD GET THIS GUY!!!" Turns out that was the most minutes he had played ever. Most games he couldnt get off the bench at all. North also became a phony that would just say things to get a reaction. "HArbaugh is beter dan Aikman" "Steve Walsh is a g reat QB". No one could be that stupid. And finally the "street talk" BS. That was always his excuse when he'd make a racial slur. Now its the con jobs and Charity lies.

If I'm wrong for hating a guy for these reason please prove it to me. North was the face of the Score a long time ago but unfortunately his had to be the biggest and richest and most famous and he will never pull that off. that is proven with the multiple failures and embarrassments over the last few years.

If he had never changed then he may well be loved rather that laughed at and made fun of.

I didn't say you were unjustified, just monotonous.

This thread isn't about what he is today. It is a reminisience on the joy he provided.

His program has always lacked substance.
I never really considered North to be clever on-air, but his afternoon work was a guilty pleasure. Some of those jag bag sessions were pure venom, crass and obscene to the nth degree -- but I still laughed out loud.
In the wake of Timberlake-Jackson, North had to scale back the jocularity on his show -- and he was left with nothing. B and B were also curtailed with their subject matter -- no more TB Diddler copy -- but both still had enough sports acumen to keep their show afloat.
The edge was gone, and Mike is just unable to be articulate about sports. He's not an X's-and-O's guy, he's unable to break down past players or events with any kind of detail and finishes off this train-wreck trifecta with his lack of depth to discuss present-day topics.
Like comedy, Lenny Bruce was extremely vulgar, but there was a message wrapped within the lewd talk. North is the Andrew "Dice" Clay of sports talk radio. Erase the profane-infused nursery rhymes and what was left with Clay's routine?
Erase the sexual innuendo, sexist or lewd talk and what's left for North.

North is a has-been. He is Mr. Irrelevant no matter how hard he tries now. No one cares about his thoughts or his show.

Grave dancing is fun and he deserves it.

The cart of Pappy with Dick Butkus is priceless. This was a time when North was at the top of his game & he wouldn't take shit from anyone, even a Chicago icon like Butkus.
Apparently Burkus was to spend a certain amount of time with North & Dick decided that he had enough & acted like a complete douche...and North gave it right back to him.

he was before my time as a chicago sports radio listener, but at the tail end of his stint on the score, i just got the feeling he just bought into his own hype too much. like eskin in philly. became somewhat of a caricature, although eskin is a lot brighter and a LOT more smug, akin to bernstein. maybe north is kinda like the sports radio version of don imus.

He was a tremendous interviewer until the you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours started about 10 years ago.
He sold out his audience on the SCORE and didn't think anyone would notice what a shill he became.

Pete Rose is one of the all time tools and liers in sports.
I knew he was full of shit & that he bet on Basesball, & I believe that he did bet against the Reds.
He should never get into the HOF.

Anyway, the point is that back in the day, North was a great interviewer who never asked softball questions & he was the only interviewer in Chicago who had the balls to stand up to douchebags like Butkus & Ditka.
I know that even you guys who hate North now, remember those days.
The good old days indeed...

At first he was an unpredictable interviewer who tended to ask question that weren’t always soft. After a while he began to believe that he was edgy when in fact he had become inane. His interview with Jack Kent Cooke is the one I remember best and last, because Cooke called North a “blatherskite” which was a most apt and succinct description of North. After he broke with Jiggetts I stopped listening for content all together.

Going to say you got a ton of it in the last 15 mins of the show. MOW!

Pretty sure I was looking for an exit on I 57 south when I got a "1-2-3! Light emup! What's your favorite breakfast Cereal?"

While I think North could make a return one day he never will because he would never just go on a show that he doesn't control.

I dont hate pappy, I am a critic of his, yes, but thats because his last 6 years of radio, webio and tv have sucked, but he is saying how great it was, thats a lie. I have said it for years, pappys product was good for a long time, but once he got the money, he got lazy. His ratings, effort and ego prove it. I dont care that he got the money, get it while you can, but the money changed him, people who would know better then me have told me that, but the one word that is common in the discussions i have had with people is "lazy".

As a sports talk radio fan, i never saw pappy as the face of the score, i always liked HFC and B/B more then any of pappys shows, but thats my opinion. Bottom line, pappy had a big part in bringing the score where it is, but he also had a huge hand in his own downward spiral, actually it was all him and that hurt the score, something pappy will never admit to.

I have no issues with those who defend him, but I dont think you can tell me I am wrong that he became a control freak and coudlnt dig himself out of the hole he dug, he did this to himself and I just cant feel sorry for him, nor do I think he cares if I do or dont, but when he whines about it, no tears for him from me.

But North was the face of the Score & was, more than anyone else, responsible for WSCR's success in the 1990's. We all remember how high profile he was in advertising, new stories, newspaper articles & the like. Hell, he was getting national attention & publicity ass well, to the point where WFAN in New York made North & Jiggets an offer to host a show. North turned it dowm because he couldn't leave Chicago.
Damn those were the days.

From what i understand, no offer was made, pappy made more out of that and that "offer" was floated when pappys contract came up, so i think its pretty easy to see what was going on there.

The days when pappy knew was just some guy with a radio show were good days, the day pappy decided he was above everyone at the score because of his paycheck, that was the end of pappy.

The PAPPY Years (when he was KING):
* He bought TCB rings for all his friends (Park Ridge Mafia)
* He bought his mom a pink Cadillac
* He was attracted to very young girls
* His work was copied by pale imitators
* He always addressed the elderly as ma'am or sir.
* Had a lifelong love affair with Connie Francis
* Served in the Army (presumably the US Army)
* Had problems while taking a shit.
