I know this has been covered before, and I know it cuts wide across the Chicago sports talk landscape, but Mac/Spiegel seem to be the biggest perpetrators in keeping it alive.

It was funny fifteen years ago...maybe ten...and now it makes my skin crawl whenever I hear it, perhaps more than any other sports talk pet peeve. Whether it's the "Ditka vs. a hurricane..." or "COACH" or "Ortman" et al., it has to be the most tired bit in the history of local sports talk, and I wish it would somehow die a sudden death.

I don't mind the Super Fan voice, but I do hate the constant Mike Ditka references. Also hate the DaMaNa stuff too...

When people stop sounding like that, then the imitations can be retired.

Ranger, serious question

Do you buy into the Bernstein theory that MOST Chicago fans are dull dim witted idiots?

I know you cant admit it here, but you understand the morons who call are not neccessarily indicitive of the listening audience, right?

My Dear Internet Friends,
The Super Fan voices are no more than a crutch. Same with the quotes.
Your Pal,
Evil J.A.C.K.

P.S. Fire that high pitched laughing homo, Mac. I know you need someone fatter than you around to make yourself look more flattering, but this man is not good.

I assumed by your moniker that you've spent some time down there. I grew up Beverly (EP's neighbor) and there are some bizarre cats in that area.

EP's claim to fame? The childhood home of the Unabomber. And Tom Gorzelanny.

Unfortunately, this isn't just endemic to Mac's show. I listened to S&W the other day for less than five minutes before Waddle broke out into his unfortunate "Coach speak." And when I last heard the Afternoon Saloon it didn't take Carmen too long to lean on the old crutch either.

+1

I grew up there and while it's of course not as prevalent and the joke would lead people to believe, they are there. A friend of mine dated a woman who sounded like that...it was delightful.

I thought we wanted Dan to take more calls from listeners, not less.

Have you heard the average Bears fan call?

I don't know if people talk like that all the time, or slip into it the second the Bears are mentioned.

i will argue until I am blue in the face that most of what we hear on television, movies, music, the spoken word is a midwestern dialect...unless the show is like "Boston Cops" or some shit.

and 90% of us don't talk like Superfans.

I don't feel like searching for it, but it seems to me that some time ago, this same complaint was made here about Mac overusing the Superfan voice and he responded by admitting that yes, it was a tired, old crutch indeed and he was going to stop.

Mac also said he was working hard on his new show and it would be fresh and different. I guess he lies.

I have come to the conclusion that it isn't the people working with Mac that are the problem, it's Mac. He's as stale as North, both are irrelevant now, over the hill has-beens with nothing new to offer and being lazy tossing up the same old crap from years gone by.

Is it a sin to look back? Sports is nothing without it's history. Even as a kid,I enjoyed hearing stories about Babe Ruth,Red Grange, etc. It is sad that todays youth concentrates on NOW. If it's not NOW,it doesn't matter. Mac has a 4 hours show. It's hard to change your presentation style. Whatever you think,he has made a shitload of money doing "sportstalk". The fact, that he throws in a not so subtle reminder to that fact is another story.

you came to that conclusion a long time ago, though...SID.
and i like to think (at the very least) that I am an intelligent individual.
as such, my opinion is that Mac does sports radio right.

Damn! I say that all the time - I talk to people from the east and west coasts (or the south-completely different story anyway) for my job and they're always commenting on the Chicago (or midwestern) accents, when they're the only ones who sound fucked-up
