I heard Dan refer to Peyton Manning as "Goober" Manning again and I've never been sure why he insists on doing so. When I think of a "goober" I think of an inarticulate hick, and in all the commercials or TV appearances (SNL) I've seen him in, he's struck me as anything but.

Goober on The Andy Griffith Show was regarded as the village idiot and Payton doesn't strike me as that, either.

What am I missing, or does calling someone a "goober" mean something that isn't derogatory?

Exactly. Peyton plays the dork gimmick up in his commercials, especially the one where he was cheering on the restaurant staff. He's quite good at it.

I dunno...he seemed pretty personable and funny when he hosted SNL and in his commercials. I guess I equated that with personality and not really dorky which I think would mean having no social skills or personality.

He can be all those things. He's done well for himself commercially being himself, I give him credit for that.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I never thought of Eli as the cooler brother. He always seemed like the goober with no personality, whereas Peyton at least made the goober into a successful media image.

People like dorky too. I don't think its mutually exclusive to having personality.

"Cut that meat" and the SNL clip are not Goober-worthy.
Do you see Manning saying "Wrigley Stadium" during the Seventh-Inning Stretch? That's Goober-worthy.

i am just glad that we belong to the totally un-dorky world of message board posters, so we can freely label successful professional athletes as "dorks".

It was the only nickname that Mac could come up with. Everyone needs an insulting nickname at the frat house. Let's go keg tossing.

In an interview Archie Manning had with Dan Patrick a few years ago when D.P. & Mac were at ESPN Radio, I heard Archie refer to Peyton as "Longneck". Why I'm not sure... :?

Ok to you and all the people who are saying..."Id be that goober"

He's probably a dork by any standards, but by athlete standards he certainly is.

He might be the greatest QB of all time.
Bill Gates might be the greatest business man of all time.

Both still dorks.

Yes. It's a similar situation to Steve Phillips. Would certain message board peeps hit his mistress? Maybe. But that doesn't change the fact as a pseudo-celebrity he should be doing much better.

*Played out Pot Kettle Picture*

There is a ridiculous amount of evidence that Peyton IS a dork.

I never said I was not a dork.

But im not. Even if I was doesnt change the fact that Peyton is a dork.
