More stories need to come out.

The Sox players guzzle beer and the Cubs players guzzle each other?  what the hell kind of call is that?

I look at the Boston stuff and the White Sox stories like this:

On one hand, we are talking about a bunch of adults who can make their own decisions without the media or fans’ opinions. I could see if these were high school players or something, but they really don’t have to answer to anyone.

On the flip side of that coin, however, the obvious argument is that yes, they do have someone to answer to: their employer. I can’t just go down to our employee lounge, crack open a beer and take a nap. I have to sit at my desk and work for 8 hours each day, and I certainly don’t make millions of dollars to do it. Then again, I am a salaried employee (much like professional baseball players are salaried) and when my work is done, I can go home.

I think the angle that people look at this will really depend on whether they think these guys were drinking on the job, or if they weren’t “being there for their teammates”. I find those two arguments to be totally different.

One is a matter of morals, while the other is a matter of being a poor employee.

The culture of baseball has allowed this forever. There are however only a few times where this drinking will take place....

1. When a manager or player is tossed from a game

2. When a starting pitcher is done for the night it is very common for him to have a cold beer placed in his locker by the equipment manager to have after he finishes his post game exercises/conditioning.

3. As a team unity thing (kind of an in game slump buster) that occurs late in the season or playoffs to disrupt the monotony. This is not that common but it would involve maximum participation and minimal consumption. The thing with the Red Sox/Yankees ALCS shows this. They had a cup they all took a sip from. They did not have a bartender line up doubles for everyone in the clubhouse.

What the Red Sox are said to have done involves the starting pitchers treating the season like spring training and just fucking off. What AJ said sounds stupid. I think what he meant was more like point 3 I made but he made it sound like he rolls into the dugout by himself or with a few guys and they shotgun beers and return to the game.

I agree on all counts.

For some reason, I just don't seem to have that big an issue with any of this stuff. I mean; baseball players do a lot of sitting around. Pitchers only "work" every fifth day. Sure, they have conditioning and side-sessions and whatnot... but we're just talking about beer and video games here.

Of course, those two vices aren't going to make John Lackey a better pitcher, either. If that were the case, then I would be Satchel Paige.

There are other barriers preventing that, Ugie.

I agree with both UMN and Shiv's last posts. Mac is really freaking out as if they were getting sloppy before and throughout the game. It's a beer. Calm down.

And like the one caller pointed out, if a player he liked would have said it, he wouldn't be calling for their head, and he quickly backed down and passed over the idea.

I think it's just a slow news week for the Sox thanks to KW losing his mind last week...

Ive always maintained that if I were a SP, I would be high/drunk/fucking around at least 3 of every 5 days.

The chart day and the day I pitch. Other than that, I would do whatever I do at home when Im watching baseball.

Can you please coach up Randy Wells on how to make this work effectively. You are a starting pitcher you only need to be sober for the night before your start. Its not that difficult....

You can't compare other areas of life to the Sports World. It's completely different, yet it somehow always turns into "I'd get fired if I did that". You probably would.....they won't. It's like that in almost every case. They get away with doing things you can't....

Disagree. Had a record profit one year so I took a couple bottles of champagne and sprayed everyone in the office unexpectedly.

They loved it.

I'm more troubled by the seeming inability to abstain from drinking until after a game. As an owner, you don't want to have to treat these players like children, but that is what they really are. Don't have it available until after the game. Most will not care. The drunks will protest and then sneak it in anyway.

I'm surprised that anyone can sit through a whole baseball game without drinking.

I will not hear you talk badly about the most popular sport in this country. If you don't like it why don't you move to your precious Canada.

Who delivered the silo cans to the studio? This has some decent potential.

What the Red Sox pitchers, did with Drinking Beers, eating fast food, and playing video games, I think some people would like to do that every day of their life.

The only problem I would see, if you had an extra inning game and used all your bullpen and needed to throw starting pitchers out there.
