Thanks for the tip, Matt in the Crown. I'll try to be mindful of making annoying noises during interviews. Never heard that before but I'm always trying to get better.

As for how I interview the guests... I'm pretty fucking good at it because 1) I'm coachable 2) I've been coached. The guy Justin Craig brought in from Canada a few years ago enlightened those of us who paid attention:

1) ONE QUESTION AT A TIME. Ask double barreled questions and you give the guest control of the interview.

2) AVOID HYPERBOLE UNLESS IT'S ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. We have four hours everyday. The reason to get a guest on is to get HIS opinion.

3) DON'T ANSWER THE QUESTION AFTER YOU'VE ASKED IT. Self explanatory.

Those are Cliff's notes on the seminar. They're all excellent tips. Now listen carefully and see if I practice what I just wrote.

Dan, please explain those two points to Mully and Hanley in detail.

Quick question - Mully does each one of these 24 hours a day nonstop doesn't he? Or is that something that everybody knows already and just lets it go on? Of course it is. So, is his family from England? I think some of them are - not royals though. So, what do you think?

Yep, you two beat me to the punch. Mully does this with EVERY guest they have on. That's why I thought it was awesome a couple of weeks ago when Cooper said, "Well, I'm not really sure what your question is but..."

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought MJH always poked fun at the "Guy from Canada."

One of my favorite post-Mac interview segements was when you had interviewed a Bulls' player who had just concluded a signing session at a wireless phone store. I can't remember who it was.

The guy was a huge dud who answered with three word responses. As much as that was bad radio, the banter about it on MJH afterwards was very entertaining. Who was that, Mac?

Speaking on Interviews, how about some of the guests they have had this week, Boomer Esiason on Monday, Bill Cowher on Wednesday, and Michael Irvin today.

I know there's a thread in Mac's old show about the guest they get, but these 3 isn't a bad get either.

I did like the Michael Irvin one today, didn't realize Chicago had a Hurricane Alumni assocation.

To NSJ, If I remember right, it was Ben Gordon.

nsj, I think it was Ben Gordon.

He's British so Mully loves him.

Yes, it was Ben Gordon. I don't think I've ever heard a worse interview where the subject could actually speak English. It was abysmal.

Seriously.

Also, can you resume your efforts to demand the proper pronunciation of "Urlacher?"

that is one thing i hate when i hear an interview...double barreled questions ...that is why espn gets weak ass interviews..you should forget that crap, be yourself and ask what you think the listener wants to hear...not lets some jerkoff talk in cliches and talk for 8 minutes and say nothing.

your memory of mjh and the canadian interview coach is accurate. we bitched and moaned about it for several days leading up to the seminar. less than five minutes into the dude's lecture.... i realized how much all of us in sportsradio need stuff like that.

I don't know if this was anywhere else, but speaking of interviews, the Michael Irvin interview was outstanding. I normally PTFB if Irvin is on any platform.

I think I might podcast that. I don't like him, but I'm intrigued by the guys saying that he was an honest interview.

since it has to do with interviews, i thought the irvin interview was spectacular...it really grinds me that he feels he has to go over the top when he's on TV. on the radio he's a lot more subdued and actually pretty intelligent. he's also freakin' hysterical and has great stories.

i hated the cowboys of his era but i always respected him as a player. he has a dark past but i admire that he's open about it.

Very generous of you, Mac. You're back on the "yesterday" track this a.m. Hailing from southern IL, I have plenty of speech imperfections. Luckily mine are not on the radio, though.
