It's not that he doesn't know hockey. He's right about that assinine penalties, of which Shaw needs to sit for game 4. What about our team captain and first line all star center. Captain 2013 playoff scoreless Jonathan Toews. ZERO GOALS FOR THE 2013 PLAYOFFS PEOPLE!!!!! ZERO GOALS!!! UNACCEPTABLE from a team captain at the center position. |

He didn't even know that being scored on shorthanded doesn't count against your +/- stat. |

The Wings played their asses off the last week of the season, went from 10th to 7th in standings. |

It's a column chock-full of attempts to delude thyself and the readers, e.g., Quote: Whatever jealousies that existed from the Red Wings' 11 Stanley Cup titles — the last in 2008 — faded to black and white when the Hawks hoisted the Cup three years ago next month. Somehow stating the year for the last Detroit Cup makes it seem positively ancient compared to the Blackhawks 201--no, wait, "3 years ago next month" Stanley Cup Championship. The extent to which Mr McNeil's column captures the dominant sentiment among the lion's share of current Blackhawks fans after game 1--who gave no shits about anything puck-related prior to John McDonough bringing his Wrigleyville act to the near West side in 2007-2008: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McDon ... Blackhawks is remarkable and commendable--it just doesn't go far enough. Sonic Youth's uber-pretentious-pretentiously-uber Thurston Moore once said the goal of his band was to be the next Grateful Dead, no, wait. that's not right. Well, it is, he did say that. But the other thing he said is that his band's goal was to "crystallize the zeitgeist and shatter it at once. Which made everyone within earshot think, "damn, I want some of whatever Thurston's on." McNeil--good artists borrow, great artists steal. Steal a page from columnists from Dave Barry to Mike Royko to Dear Abbey and Dan Savage (like Dan and Abbey don't make up half those letters, ha!) and Bill and Ted's buddy's buddy Plato: create some archetypal characters (Connor-Come-Lately Blackhawks Fan, Mikita-Esposito-Sutter-Savard recollecting old-timer, sissy-fied Dan Bernstein type fan, just there for the Party, Margaritaville and Dave Matthews Cover Band Cover Band Fan et al) and throw them into a dialogue in your column. Just a suggestion. CSFMB could no doubt conjure up another dozen types of Blackhawks fans. Also, start a podcast, you'll never have to deal with ratings or co-hosts or corporate lackeys again. |
