Chicago Cubs 2008 Betting Preview

The Chicago Cubs finished the 2007 season with a 85-80 record and won the National League Central division with Lou Piniella managing his first year in Chicago. The Cubs were swept in the wild card round of the NL playoffs by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Cubs were 44-38 at home, 41-42 on the road and 45-34 against their division. Chicago Cubs bettors were disappointed as Chicago finished -15.30 units for the season. The Cubs were a good UNDER team going under the betting total with a 91-66 under record.

Statistically the Cubs finished in the upper half of most offensive and pitching categories in all of major league baseball. The numbers offensively were;

7th overall with a .271 batting average.
8th overall with 752 runs scored.
9th overall with a .333 on base percentage.
8th overall with a .422 slugging percentage.
10th overall with 86 stolen bases.

The pitching numbers were;

2nd overall with a 4.04 team ERA.
1st overall with a .246 batting average against.
8th overall with 39 saves
2nd overall with a 1.32 WHIP
6th overall with 81 quality starts.

Lou Piniella has a career managing record of 1604-1496 over 20 years as a big league manager.

The Cubs have been fairly quiet this off-season. They traded Craig Monroe to the Minnesota Twins and signed Jon Lieber, who had been with the Philadelphia Phillies, to a one-year contract. The Cubs also signed right fielder Kosuke Fukudome who came with a lot of excitement.

Chicago still has Derek Lee and Aramis Ramirez on the corners and one of the best offensive players in the game in Alfonso Soriano in left field. They have a strong starting rotation behind Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, Rich Hill, Jason Marquis and Jon Lieber. The Cubs also possess one of the stronger bullpens with Bob Howry, Jose Ascanio, Scott Eyre, Michael Wuertz, Ryan Dempster and Carlos Marmol who will be given every opportunity to win the closers job this spring. Kerry Wood is also lurking out there as a possible closer.

The oddsmakers have the Cubs favored to win the NL Central again at +105, +645 to win the National League pennant and +1815 to win the World Series. The over/under for their team total wins has been set at 87.5
