Wolfgang is a serious animal but this race looks wide open to me. The filly, Atlanta, has a big chance in there and actually may be favored vs. Wolfgang.
Also, Takter's other three horses have shots. Zephyr Kronos is coming into his own right now. He got stuck out in the 9-hole and doesn't seem to have huge gate speed so that could be an issue for him in the first heat. His best shot is probably to try to get as much as he can in the elimination heat and then hope to get lucky with a middle post in the final. The track will undoubtedly be rolled out in an attempt to create phony world records which usually means that things will be biased in favor of the speed horses. You Know You Do and Tactical Landing have also drawn outside in their elimination. Both horses have been specifically pointed to Saturday, avoiding big confrontations and building confidence. It wouldn't surprise me if either of them won.
Finally, Crystal Fashion has a good chance. He's in the first elimination against Wolfgang and Atlanta, but if he's 8-1 or better, I'll be firing.
I've narrowed 18 down to six and my betting on Saturday will come down to the prices. And for the final, how they raced in the elim heats. I'm alive in Future Pool No. 2 with Zephyr Kronos at 45/1 and in Pool No. 3 with You Know You Do at something close to that (I haven't seen what the closing odds were yet), so I have some room for hedging here.
Probably the best Hambletonian in a long time.
BONUS: I'm looking for Nutcracker Sweet to get off the schneid for 2018 in the Cane Pace (Race 7). He doesn't like to win, but he's gone some huge trips and has been knocking on the door all season. I think Sears will work out a good trip with him on Saturday.
