My wife looked at all of the horses, and decided she wanted to put $2 down on I'll Have Another. Beginners luck.

It was my wife's play. She isn't a gambler.

Mario Gutierrez just pwned a group of the 20 most seasoned and talented jockeys in the country. Winning from the 19 post on that horse is amazing.

Great race! I have no problem with the "take no prisoners" strategy used by Baffert and Smith with Bodemeister. He was the best horse and he almost got it done against unreal fractions. He'll be 3-5 in Baltimore. Stone cold exacta Bodemeister-Union Rags at Pimlico in two weeks.

On to the fights on the best classic sports day of the year! Did the White Sox happen to win one on another Dunn homer too???? It's a great day to be alive!

I think Eddie O did the Rangers-Caps game this afternoon in DC. Maybe his wife?

Apparently, Fritzy has the "O" plate. I just saw him at Psistaria on Touhy and Cicero. I did him the courtesy of finishing up my skordalia and dolmades and quickly exiting, since I know he likes being the most interesting guy in the room and that wasn't possible as long as I was there. One minute I'm dining on Greek food, the next minute I'm back on the streets of Lincolnwood flim-flamming again.

Fritzy has "Fritzy" plates on his car, but I'm sure he has more than one.

Yeah, I've seen the "Fritzy" plates many times. We've all got black Benz-os but only 26 motherfuckers are lucky enough to have a single letter plate.

19.) I’ll Have Another – One of the biggest challenges for the handicapper looking at this Derby is figuring out what to make of the West Coast horses. My guiding light up until around five weeks ago was that the horses running in California were all being wildly overrated, a theory that blew up when Bodemeister obliterated the Arkansas Derby field.
Part of the problem is that the Santa Anita Derby, run one week before the Arkansas Derby, just wasn’t a very good race. It got a decent speed figure, but the pace was slow (for the rock hard tracks of California) and the closing fractions were not much better. Maybe you can excuse Creative Cause (much more on him in his section), since he was coming from further back and was compromised by the sluggish pace; the horses coming from the front still had tons of energy at the end. So what was I’ll Have Another’s excuse for such a mediocre showing?

OK, I’m being a little hard on a horse who did, after all, win the race, and won the Robert B Lewis Stakes before that in his only two races as a three year old. But I’ll Have Another will never in his life get a better set-up then he faced in the Santa Anita Derby, and he needed every hair on his head to win. This time out, the pace will be much quicker, the finish will be faster, and he’ll have to demonstrate far more talent than he’s shown thus far in his career.

So why all the love from journalists for I’ll Have Another? On the official Kentucky Derby website, two of the six experts had I’ll Have Another as their top selection a week before the race. All six had him in their top ten. My theory is that he beat Creative Cause in the Santa Anita Derby, and Creative Cause beat Bodemeister in the San Felipe, so by the transitive property that makes I’ll Have Another the best horse out of California. That kind of logic has burned a lot of money over the years. I’ll Have Another, unlike Creative Cause and Bodemeister, has never run a particularly impressive race in his life, and he’ll be running headlong into a suicidal pace unlike any he’s ever experienced. If you want 12-1 on that, be my guest. Toss for me.

I should have paid more attention to this.

Both backed off before the race. I think even the people who were positive on I'll Have Another jumped off when he got stuck at post 19.

I know absolutely nothing about horse racing. Does this horse have any shot at the triple crown?

I'm not fantastically optimistic. He likely won't be favored in the Preakness, and probably wouldn't be in the Belmont either.

He started in the auxillary starting gate correct? If so, how many horses have won from out there, I don't think it is many.

The favorite right now is Bodemeister for the Preakness.
edit* If Baffert decides to run him.

He's the 10th to win from the 15th position out since 1900. I'm not sure when they started doing the auxiliary gate the way they do now. He's the first to win from 19. Big Brown did it from 20 a couple of years ago, as did a horse back in the 20s.

Yeah, I don't know when they started using the auxillary gate either, but I am thinking Big Brown was the first horse to win from it.
