Post subject:  Brady Quinn bet

After all the gushing media love for Mr. Quinn in the bowl game, (led by Mel Kyper and his friends on the booyah network) a buddy of mine (the worst sports gambler in the world) told me he thought Quinn would be a top 5 pick in the draft. Heck, he wasn't even the best QB in that bowl game. I'll take Russell over Quinn. I figured it was only a matter of time before the NFL scouts realized he was over-rated by Mel and the other draftniks. So I bet my buddy that Quinn would not be top five nor would he be one of the top two Qbs selected. Looks like the truth is coming out at the combine. How far will he fall?

you think the Raiders are going to take a wide receiver?

Quinn will be gone by the time pick 9 is up for sure. If he's there at 9 Miami has to take him. I suspect that the Vikings are going to get lucky and grab him though.

I guess the Raiders could take Russell as well.

it sounds like right now, barring trades, Russel will be taken with the first pick, Thomas or Calvin Johnson to the Lions, and Peterson to the Browns. Quinn should be taken in the top 10, because if the Lions take Thomas, the Bucs will take Johnson. I don't know if the Vikings will try for Quinn, because they may want to see some more of the quarterback they drafted last year that only played in a couple of games, I thought not great but decent, can't think of his name right now, I think Daveres Thompson.

What QB is going to jump over Quinn? I think Russel will and if it was my team I would want them too, but I don't see how Quinn falls any further than Leinart did. Quinn still has the hype machine built up from 4 years of college stardom to make him too hard to pass up.

By the way, I don't see him being picked in the top 5 so at least you got that going for you.

detroit or cleveland may take him...

I wouldn't be surprised to see Quinn fall for a long time. Could be an Aaron Rodgers type situation, but based more on not that many teams feel they need a QB in the first round.

Let me pose the improbable just so I can see the response form you guys, but let's say Brady Quinn drops to 20. Would you want to see the Bears trade up to get him?

wow...good question.
while i think he's going to be a great QB, probably not.
Rex is our Quarterback

Brady will not drop out of the top ten....

One thing that is as certain as death and taxes is that many media and fans will over-value ND players. Had Quinn played for Iowa we would not even have had this discussion. Quinn is a nice player who choked in big games and deserved to be drafted late first. Thankfully most GMs are smarter than conventional wisdom and recognized his true value and talent. I think Beck will go ahead of Quinn. We shall see....

Nice to see Quinn go to his hometown team. I felt sorry for him to be on the spot llike that all day. He seems like a nice kid who was a victim of inaccurate media expectations. Had he not been overhyped so much by Mel and ESPN maybe he would not even had been there in the first place...as is the case with most of the mid and late first rounders.

I won one bet (not in top five) and lost one (2nd qb taken). They weren't for the same amounts though. Not a lot of money Coach..just to prove a point with my buddy that Quinn was overhyped by the booyahs. Seeemingly only Cleve had him in their top 20.

I don't get all the anti-Quinn stuff.

I hate Notre Dame with a passion. When Oregon State pounded them in the Fiesta Bowl, I called every Irish fan I knew just to rub it in; I'm a dick like that.

However, while I may hate the institution of Notre Dame football, I have nothing against its players. To me, Brady handled himself remarkably well and I think he will be a good QB in the NFL. Maybe he is self-centered and thinks he is better than he really is, but I didn't see any of that yesterday.

I would love to have a reason to bash anything Notre Dame. However, in this case, I see no reason for it.

Just to be clear Slice, I don't think you saw anyone here bashing ND or its players. Others may do it, but I don't see it in this thread. So I'm not sure to whom you are directing your comment in this thread that somebody here is "bashing" Quinn or ND. You'll have to help me with that interpretation.

This thread was about the gushing media love for Quinn and how wrong it was. I thought Quinn was overrated by the ESPN draft "gurus" who made everyone believe he was a top five player...when he definitely was not. He became the victim of their inaccurate projections because he was brought to NY (when he should not have been) and was stuck in front of the cameras. No other low first round choice had to endure that. ESPN was very unfair to Quinn by telling everyone he was a top five pick. And no NFL team is going to go publicly and say "no he's not". So he became a victim of inaccurate expectations. That was my point. For you to talk about "bashing" here, I suspect you missed the point. I like the kid. I think he will be a good QB..certainly the best one Cleveland has on its roster.

Quinn did also openly state that he thinks he should be the #1 pick in the draft. I am not saying there is anything wrong with that but he isn't a victim of the ESPN hype machine more than anyone else.

anyone care to wager that he will go 22nd in the draft? I had a premonition that the Browns are going to trade up and snatch him up!
