One of the better trotters I've ever seen had to scratch. The race is a lot more wide open now. I'm going with International Moni.

Either him or Devious Man. With Devious Man drawing the 9 hole, you're probably right.

I like the two from Melander's barn - Long Tom and Enterprise. It should be an interesting set of races.

Yeah, I'm not sad Walner is out.

Also, I think Dream Together has a shot at Ariana G. Maybe she's just too good but I'm sure they weren't really trying with Dream last week.

Last time Gun Runner ran at Saratoga, he was third. I'm just saying.

Both Keen Ice and Breaking Lucky have a decent shot. I would throw out Breaking Lucky's last race. He's been better than that at 1 1/8 mi.

The Chilean horse, Tu Brutus, is a classic horse. He can go wire-to-wire with Gun Runner.

Post subject:  Re: The Whitney/Hambletonian

I don't think Keen Ice has any chance at a buck and an eighth in a race thaf figures to have a tepid pace. Gun Runner will be hard to beat but I think Tu Brutus has a shot. I'm using Discreet Lover in the back end of the gimmicks.

I've spent a lot of time on that race. I love Bricks and Mortar horse and I think Brown will have him cranked up for the Breeder's Cup Mile, but this isn't the best spot for him today. I will be hammering Secretary At War at what figures to be a big price. 9 to win. Exacta partial 9 with 1 and 2.

He didn't do so well last time out. Which track is he at? Monmouth or Belmont?

Patch is back in the West Virginia Derby tomorrow.

While I think he has an edge in this race, I feel strongly about Phat Man at 10-1.

He ran down the favorite, Talk Logistics, in July in the 100K Long Branch at Monmouth, even though he was three or four wide for most of the race. And that was at a buck and a sixteenth. Give him another half a furlong, and I don't see who will catch him other than Patch and the A.J. Foyt horse, Colonelsdarktemper, with the latter having ran well in the Indiana Derby, second to Irap.

Where was Looking at Lee in the Belmont and Preakness?

I like Game Over. Just not sure he can hold up at the distance. He tired late in the Ohio Derby. And with the one post here, he's at risk from burning himself out from too fast a pace, if he sprints out to take the lead early. And if he doesn't, he's liable to get stuck in traffic, forcing him to go wide in this big field. Either way, not the best spot.

In terms of speed, though, he rates second behind Patch.

Thanks. Arklow should win this one with Geroux aboard. Distance is right in Arklow's sweet spot, and he's got the most speed in the race. Odds-makers clueless making him 10-1 here. I have him a little better than 3-1.

I'm glad Mike Smith is not riding, because he's been no good lately. Couldn't win with Arrogate and he fell off his horse in that Del Mar race last week.

That's a nice horse. I figured the pace would be a little softer in there and it didn't help that Secretary At War stumbled coming out of the gate.

Who do you like in the Test? I think Vertical Oak has a HUGE shot in there.

How about the Hillbilly Derby?

By the way, Walt, it's August.

I'm kicking Arklow out of my barn.

Maybe the horse was off from being shipped, but it seemed Geroux was too casual early on, even with the outside post. Did he really think he was going to run everyone down from so far back?

The same effing thing happened with Divine Intervention in the 8th, just completely flat.

Not to take away anything from an undefeated horse in Brick and Mortar, but his speed figures were subpar compared to the others. Makes me question Brisnet versus Equibase.

Note to self: Don't bet at Saratoga and maybe stay away from turf racing.

Those were serious animals in that field. Arklow is a nice horse but he was in deep. Plus the pace scenario wasn't helping him from the outside.

At the OTB I heard Gunnevera is back on Sunday for the Tangelo Stakes at Gulfstream.

Trainer says he's been training well and his condition is perfect.

I wish I had just gone with Petrov today in the 8th at Toga. He outclassed those other horses with an easy win at 7f. Probably will be the same for Gunnevera on Sunday.

Arklow was not the same horse today and in the Belmont Derby as before these two races. If the shipping is not to blame, than the jockey is at fault.

From the pps it says under the notes of Arklow, "Poor Jockey Win% this meet." I guess that means that Geroux doesn't know shit about racing at Saratoga or he doesn't know how to race on turf or both. He had the best horse and blew it. The two-month lay-off is no excuse.

If Brisnet isn't a sham, Arklow had better LP figures than Brick and Mortar. While I only bet a small amount on him, he should have at least hit the board.

Author:  Dignified Rube [ Fri Aug 04, 2017 8:26 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: The Whitney/Hambletonian

Just watched the race again, and I am right---Geroux is effing idiot.

Because of his outside post, he needed to fight to get position in the opening quarter; but he just gave up and settled back, killing his horse's momentum out of the gate.

Then the MF stayed behind traffic the whole race that he didn't even give Arklow a chance, who wanted to go. There simply was no lane for him.

This might be the single worst race by a jockey I've seen. Completely incompetent. Geroux should be shipped back to France.
