For the layman, I’m guessing that I’m looking at you potentially make a lot of money?

The 2 won at 15/1. The 11 got nosed out for second at 20/1. The exacta would have paid about $500 for two bucks and I had it ten times.

Curious, why you don't just make a a $2 wager and repeat...aren't you subjecting yourself to taxes?

...always looking to learn...

and my girl had her -itis today at AP, so

And sorry about the bad beat.

Not anymore. And if I remember correctly the old rule was 600/1, wasn't it? I used to break down to the smallest increment on tris and supers but they changed the reporting rules.

Do you own Fate Factor?

Interesting, I know I've hit some big tickets and not gotten the love note from the IRS. I need to look into that.

Yes I'm in a group that owns her, KCA Stables, and she is currently our only horse. KCA stands for "Kicking Cancer's Ass" and a portion of winning purses are given to St. Jude's. Just gotta turn those 2nd's and 3rd's into a trip to the winners circle more often.

And sorry about the bad beat, yikes.

Thanks. I had the horse to win for a few bucks, but that exacta was the real bonanza.

One of the changes that was made is that the IRS used to view the 600/1 as odds based upon the increment of the bet rather than based upon the cost of the ticket. For example, my standard superfecta bet is to key one horse with five horses in the other positions. It's a $60 bet based upon a dollar betting increment, i.e. 60 combinations. Prior to the changes, if I won that bet and it came back paying $600, it was a "signer". The government viewed it as paying 600/1 rather than the 10/1 that it did from my perspective and based upon the actual ticket cost. Thankfully, the feds now see it my way.

That's pretty cool about your horse. I'll follow Fate Factor from here on out. I thought she was a sure winner coming off the last corner.

For some reason they don't give out the Will Pays when it's a mandatory. I couldn't find them anywhere. That made it hard to hedge. I had to take an educated guess based on 562 live tickets and the Pick-5 Will Pays. I ended up betting $400 on the 5 and $200 each on the 2 and 8. It wasn't a terrible result but it would have been nice if the 4 had gotten up. The fact that I only had $115 originally invested and that I had six horses covered gave me some leverage.

I'm not really a hedge guy. I thought long and hard about doing it. And I almost didn't. Philosophically, it was a tough call for me. I generally look at it as, "you handicapped the races and structured the ticket and nothing has changed just because you're live", but I figured if I cashed the Pick-6 I probably wasn't going to miss the $800 and I just really didn't want to come away empty after getting all the way to the end, plus I only had the three uncovered numbers to deal with.
