The last time rain washed out qualifying, it was at ChicagoLand Speedway, and by NASCAR rules, Kyle Busch was awarded the pole based on points, and ended up squeaking by Jimmie Johnson and the #48 Lowe's Chevy to win in Joliet. The driver of the #18 M&Ms Toyota actually won the first road course race of the season at Sonoma, CA in June, and needless to say, he's had a great season to this point. Like Sonoma, this Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race is on a road course at Watkins Glen, NY. With that in mind, guys like the #24 DuPont Chevy of Jeff Gordon, the #20 Home Depot Toyota of Tony Stewart & the #42 Big Red/Juicy Fruit Dodge of Juan Pablo Montoya seem to do extremely well on a road course. That said, I don't care for him, but I think Gordon is due to actually win a race, and this might be a good spot to pick Jeff to win Sunday.

Ok - I'm a little confused as to who SHARK is picking, but:

I'll take "My name is Juan Pablo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die."

He actually won on a road course for his only win in what is now called the Sprint Cup series, but my pick is Jeff Gordon and the #24 DuPont Chevy. I'm picking Gordon based on his success on road courses, and the fact he's won 4 times at the Glen.

Sorry to disappoint you, CTF. Because qualifying was rained out, Boris Said did not make the cut among the 43 drivers who will on the road course at Watkins Glen, NY Sunday. Interestingly enough, Boris, also an ESPN analyst, is actually a pretty good road course driver. Unfortunately, there is only a handful of NASCAR drivers who are strictly road course drivers. Two such drivers, Said & Ron Fellows, don't necessarily drive each week.

Marcus Ambrose & the #21 Little Debbie's Ford Fusion actually finished 3rd at the Glen, which is really good for a driver that started 43rd & last in the field. After the fact, I was unaware that ESPN's Boris Said did land a ride for the race, driving the #45 for Petty Enterprises. My mistake...Kyle Busch, who drove the #18 M&Ms Toyota to victory lane in Sonoma, CA in June, won for the 8th time this season with Tony "Smoke" Stewart finishing 2nd at Watkins Glen, NY. My pick: Jeff Gordon and the #24 DuPont Chevy, a 4 time winner at the Glen, finished 29th. Back to Kyle, it was his 8th Sprint Cup series win of the season, and he also became the first NASCAR driver to win three road course races in the same season. Kyle was also in victory lane when the Nationwide Series raced in Mexico last April...Next up, NASCAR heads back to Michigan, where Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and the #88 AMP Energy Chevy raced into victory lane on Father's Day.

CTF, that might be a good call on your part. Drivers for Roush/Fenway Racing, Richard Childress Racing & Joe Gibbs Racing have done really good this season, the first since NASCAR announced in the offseason to utilize the controversial "Car of Tomorrow" in every single race this season. Carl has had a good season, constantly driving the #99 AFLAC/Office Depot Ford Fusion into victory lane, and he may actually become one of those NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers that'll become quite a star off the track as well as on it.

The Week 2 thread will open,(tomorrow) 08|15|08 3:30 p.m. 3M Performance 400 qualifying SPEED TV.

There may be more people that join on as the weeks come. If 20 or 30 people make picks, it will take tens of tens of minutes to do all that fancy excel tabulating.

The Pick Winners CFB, NFL starts in two weeks so I expect one or two people to notice this thread while checking out the football action.

The Pick Winners thread will open on Tuesdays and the NASCAR Pick'em will open day of qualifing. This will be Fridays, although the next three races Bristol, California, and Richmond are Sat. night affairs. Their quals may be Thurs. nite. My bag for not posting the whole of the weekend schedule. Thank you for the interest.

Post subject:  Re: NASCAR Pick'em Week 1 Watkins Glen Road Course

If anyone watches SPEED's "NASCAR RaceDay" before the Sprint Cup race, host John Roberts has had this thing for "The Biff", and has stayed with the driver of the #16 3M Ford Fusion for quite sometime. He's referring to Greg Biffle, who drives for Roush/Fenway Racing, and is definitely due to find victory lane. I think "The Biff" is due as well, and that's my pick for Sunday's 3M Performance 400 at Michigan to win. I also like the Justin Timberlake-looking Kasey Kahne and the #9 Budweiser Dodge, a previous winner at Michigan, to also challenge for the win.

Perhaps it would be easier if everyone would refrain from making picks until the thread is posted on Fridays.

And if you look at the actual thread for this race, Dr. Noisewater got credit for the Edwards pick. Sorry.
