This weekly wagering contest will reward the best football prognosticator with a $100 gift certificate from a meat/steak company. New guys can still join in any time and you don't have to make a pick every week. Post them all at once or in separate posts, but they must be posted in the current week's contest thread. Post your plays any time, but they must be posted before a game you are playing kicks off. You must make your picks in this thread and you must provide at least one reason for each pick. Minimum 50 picks to qualify by the end of the contest.

chus was 67% on 21 picks in week 1. Now THAT's action. Dude attacked the board and cashed. Nice job. Two more weeks like that and he can retire from the game for the rest of the year and watch people try to catch him. :D

Don't count out the college FB prognosticator Hawkeye Vince who wonders how Iowa can be favored by 27 and the o/u is 40. Cripes.

im in

early action, but here goes

all from wsex.com

S Carolina -10 v. Vandy - cocks D keeps it up, even Smelly quarterbacks can cover this one

Northwestern Duke (OVER 44.5) neither team likes to tackle that much, shouldnt be a problem

Nebraska -26.5 v. San Jose State- its good to see Nebraska scheduling a Division 1 team in a non conference game, unlike Ohio State playing Youngstown

Wisconsin -21 v. Marshall- should not be a problem, big uglys steamroll the herd.

Miami +21.5 v. Florida- just taking the points on the grudge Florida thing here. Miami will get dusted, but should be able to cover or backdoor the 21.

good luck to all

NY Giants -4. I make the number 6. Skins have a new offense and Campbell is struggling with it. If this were in Washington (as I originally mistakenly believed) I would have leaned Skins at this number. But on opening night at home, the champs are the play.

Redskins +4 at NYG

The Giants have lost a lot of defense from last years Super Bowl champions. I think the Redskins batter them all night with Portis and Betts with Campbell's weaknesses never really getting exposed.

South Carolina +10 against Vandy

This ain't Miami of Ohio.

Syracuse -4.5 against Akron

I saw something in that Syracuse team last week. It had a nice defense and I like their QB. The Orangedome is always a tough place to play

Bowling Green -5.5 against Minnesota

I know that this might be perceived as a trap game. BGSU is coming off a big victory against Pitt. Still this is the home opener and Minnesota had its hands full with MAC also ran NIU at home last weekend. This is my play of the week in college football

Arizona State -14 against Stanford

Cowboys -5.5 at Cleveland

I hate taking a road dog, especially on opening day. However, I think Dallas will shut down the vaunted Brown passing game.

Chargers -9 against Carolina

This is more based on numbers. The Chargers were excellent at covering big numbers at home this year.

Vikings +2.5 at Green Bay

What? I know the Vikings have Tavarious Jackson at QB but if you are going to use that as the barometer, they will be dogs all season. Aaron Rogers is an inexperienced QB starting against an attacking D. I also do not believe in Ryan Grant. I have a feeling that GB secondary gets old this year.

Vanderbilt +10.0 -- It's blackout night in Nashville and they are ready to show that last year was not a fluke. The line is probably influenced too much by South Carolina's strong nationally televised Thursday night shutout last week.

Pinnacle Sports

Redskins +4.5 vs Giants- I think the Giants defense struggles with the injuries and some losses and the Skins always have a good defense, so shouls make it a field goal game.

New England-KC UNDER 44-1/2
Brady is hurt.......likely worse than we know (see other threads for links). Welker is hurt. Don't expose Brady and run Lawrence run. Roll clock roll. And how in the hell is KC going to score anyway? And oh yes...this little storm called Hurricane Hannah might just be down east in Boston on Sunday too. If the deluge does hit, this number will look real sweet come Sunday.

A few more steamers....

All from 5 dimes:

NFL
Sea / Buff over 38.5: Look for a big day from M Lynch and J Jones. Neither team great at run D

NCAA
Vandy / S.C under 41: good defenses. New clock rules will help keep score low
Wake -7 1/2 vs Mississippi: Deakons are for real!
CMU +24 vs. Georgia: the class of the MAC goes to UGA. UGA will be afraid to run up the score and risk injuries (see Wells and Macklin last week)
Cal / WSU over 52: Could hit by halftime. Cal has a great offense and a pourous Defense

Ole Miss +7.5 at Wake Forest

Ole Miss better than believed, line moved towards WF despite preponderance of money being placed on WF.

Baltimore +2 (5dimes) vs Cincy

Cincy's a bad road fav.

Houston +6 vs. Pittsburgh

This line will look funny at the end of the year

Arizona -2.5 at SF

Basically a moneyline question at 2.5- is Arizona better than SF?

New Mexico +2.5 vs. TAMU

Week 2 It's Never Too Early To Start The Weekend

South Carolina @ Vandy + 9 1/2 (41)

This game may not get to twenty points. Take the under.

Washington + 4 1/2 @ NY Giants (41)

Gmen still win, but Skins show life. Take the over.

Florida-21.5 Miami doesn't have enough thugs back in its programm yet!

Jets vs. Fish love the under at 36
Pats -16 and the over 44This just shows genuis Belichick is

Tonight:

Navy @ Ball State OVER 60.5 - Both teams have high powered offenses. Navy could run for another 300+ yards tonight but Ball State will throw the ball all over the yard as well. (L - god damn son of a bitch. Navy gets stuffed on 4th and 1 at BSU's 5 and would have put it over then)

Saturday:
Eastern Michigan @ Michigan State -21: After pissing down their leg at Cal, MSU will be out for blood. (Win)

Air Force +3 @ Wyoming OVER 42.5 Air Force can put points up in bunches. Wyoming had a good win last week knocking off Ohio U. I'm actually a little surprised that the number was so low. Air Force does well on grass. (Win, Loss)

Toledo @ Arizona -23 Arizona layed a 70 spot on Idaho last week. Toledo's opener in the desert will not be a pleasant trip for the fat man coach. (win 3-2 week)

Washington +9 vs. BYU
Huskies have a solid QB and a run game, which is what I like to see in a dog. BYU is going to be one of the best teams in the MWC, but they gave up a lot of yards and was kind of sloppy vs. I-AA Northern Iowa. Now they go on the road to Seattle, where the Huskies usually play pretty well. Huskies were beaten badly, but it was at Oregon, which is no disgrace.

Georgia Tech +7 @ BC
Tech has former Navy coach Johnson and they are running the triple option. That's a tough defense to prepare for. And on offense, BC is in total rebuild mode. I will even buy a smidge on the moneyline here.

Navy @ Ball State -- 1st Half over 30.5 (beted)

donspiracy wrote:

If the above is still being enforced ( :alien: ) my reason being is that I think both teams are going to come out and score a lot early on -- Navy through the ground game and Ball State through the air. Both teams scored more in the first half than the last half in the games, and I don't see that changing here. I would not be surprised to see both teams score on their first possessions.

Post subject:  Re: Pick Winners CFB, NFL Week 1

Stanford @ ASU -- Over 51.5 (5dimes) -- Harbaugh should let Stanford run the ball all day long against the Sun Devils. They should be able to at least hang 21 against ASU. Even if Herring is hurt and doesn't play, I still like Carpenter slinging the ball around (and wouldn't mind if the Bears got him in next year's draft.) Interesting matchup as both teams continue to hit under the number, except when they play each other.

Northwestern @ Duke -- Duke +6.5 (beted) -- To me, this game is more or less a toss-up. I'll take Duke since they are getting points and they are at home. I'd personally love to see an Evanston winner here, but 6.5 points is 6.5 points.

Texas Tech @ Nevada -- Nevada +10.5 (beted) -- Texas Tech looked good last week, but Nevada did pretty well for themselves as well. I see this as similar to a USC/Vandy matchup -- two teams coming off a great prior week, but I'll still take the home team getting double digits.

Miami @ Florida -- Florida -23 (5dimes) -- This game could get REALLY ugly. Florida in the fifties and Miami at ten or under would not surprise at all. Sad that this game will get all the national media attention when much more watchable games are out there with much more interesting matchups.

Pinnacle Sports

Miami Oh +14 vs Michigan- I think Miami Oh has a decent team and Michigan struggled most of the game last week, so I will take the points here.

Northwestern -6 vs Duke- I think Northwestern takes a while just like last week, but just like last week wins by double digits, and an early thumbs down for this game not on t.v., since the Big 10 network I thought showed every game that wasn't on national t.v.

Georgia Tech +6.5 vs Boston College- Tech always plays good defense and BC only scored 21 last week, so I would say Tech keeps this within 6 and may win it.

Minnesota +5 vs Bowling Green- I think the Gophers will be the suprise Big 10 team and keep it going here.

Miami +23 vs Florida- Fan Pick, The U is rebuilding and not to keep this one close would add to, so hopefully is by 3 touchdowns or less, not another Oklahoma.
