Post subject:  Re: Pick Winners CFB, NFL Week 8

I want to read Coast's thoughts on his SJSU Spartans hosting a big weeknight game this week against a ranked opponent.

Boston College +2.5 at North Carolina

BC proved a lot to me last week. They moved the ball at will on a decent VT defense. I was especially impressed by their fairly new quarterback. As I detailed last week in picking UVa to upset UNC, the Tarheels have lost their starting QB and All America WR. They have a generous defense and are relying on a third string QB to keep them in games. It's not going to happen. Once again I go against UNC as my UPSET SPECIAL OF THE WEEK.

Pitt -9.5 against Rutgers

Lightening is going to strike me dead. I am taking Wannie as a favorite two weeks in a row. Well, the offense really should be fool proof. They have RB tandem that would make some pro teams salivate. They can grind down a team that they are physically better than with this type of game and Rutgers fits the bill.

LSU -1.5 against Georgia

Two SEC teams that have underwhelmed me all year. I like the home field advantage in this one.

Notre Dame -10.5 at Washington

You see both Wannie and ND on my list of picks and think I am going soft. ND giving this much on the road is crazy. On the other hand Washington is not only losing, they are getting blown out of the stadium every week. Their only game that was less than an 11 point loss was BYU at the beginning of the season. So it seems that this number is reasonable. Home field advantage should be minimal as an angry fan base is not supporting the Willingham regime.

Titans -4 against Colts

This one is a 5 star lock for me. The Titans strenghts match up incredibly well with the Colts weaknesses. Colts cannot stop the run and the Titans are great at it. Colts cannot run and the Titans are great at stopping it, resulting in a one dimensional Colts team. Love this game. Collins may not have to throw all night.

Chargers -3.5 against Saints in London

Jet lag, no Reggie Bush and the impending suspensions of Mc Callister and Smith should be sufficient to distract the Saints. I'm pissed I don't have a method to get this today. I would not shocked to see it near 7 at kickoff is the suspensions come down.

Panthers -4.5 against Cardinals

Using Coasts information regarding West Coast teams playing early games on the East Coast. Cardinals are not exactly west coast, but the numbers under such a scenario bear out the same with them. I don't see them breaking that trend against a Panther team that has let up only 33 points at home this year.

I got Iowa HUGE over BYE.

Bowling Green @ Northern Illinois -7.5 The Huskies are hot right now and are facing a BG team that can't stop anyone. (LOSS)

Colorado State -8.5 @ SD State: Chuck Long is dead man walking with the Aztecs. Other than an early season win against Idaho and a close game at ND, this team has been blown out week after week. CSU knows how to win and has been in some tougher games against TCU and Utah (for about a half). (LOSS)

Kentucky + 24.5 @ Florida: Trap game for the Gators with a road trip to Georgia next week. They will win here, but I expect Kentucky to put up a fight like they did to Bama. (LOSS)

Duke @ Vanderbilt -10: Vandy is coming off two tough SEC losses to Georgia and MSU. They get Duke this week and get next week off before Florida comes to town. It's time to lick some wounds and get bowl eligible for the commodores. (LOSS)

Troy -23.5 @ North texas: Levi Brown had a good game in his first start for Troy. Troy's pass D should help contain North Texas who absolutely sucks. (WIN)

Texas a&M +3 @ Iowa State: A&M is starting to buy into the system and the young players are showing ability. They are improving evey week while the Cyclones regress weekly. (WIN)

Tuesday
Ohio Team total points UNDER 20.5 (Greek)
I like the under 42.5 also, but I like this bet better because Temple may or may not have their senior QB back for this one. If it's confirmed that he is definitely out again, then the total will surely drop. If he plays, it could rise. Nonetheless, his playing won't affect Ohio's offensive numbers. And at 20.5/23.5 for team totals (two team totals equal 44), the team totals for the under give better value than the game total. Ohio has scored more than 20 only twice this season against Mac opponents, and both of those were bottom tier defenses. Temple is a top tier (for the Mac) defense, especially against the run. And Ohio will be running their old Nebraska option game tonight without their best RB, Harden, who is now out for the season.

Thursday
Auburn +3.5 @ West Virginia
SEC talent vs. Big East talent. WVU may have a speed advantage on most Big East opponents, but they shouldn't have an advantage here. Auburn appears to have scrapped their spread offense as they fired their offensive coordinator. I'd expect some good old fashioned smashmouth from the War Eagle.

Friday: No play yet on Boise @ San Jose State (thoughts for GD)
I think this one will be a close, low-scoring game. Spartans getting 7.5 against Boise is damn tempting. SJSU has covered 5 of 6 and 5 of their 6 have gone under this year. SJSU seems to rise to the occasion once a year in these nationally televised home games, and they lost to Boise by 3 two years ago in a similar spot as 13 pt. dogs. And therein lies my problem with this game. I like SJSU to keep this close, but I want more than 7.5 points. This may not be the best Boise offense in recent years, but it's their best defense. This seems like the kind of game in which the dog has been pinched because the linesmaker knows that the smart money will be on the home dog in these midweek games. I think SJSU is the right side, but don't like the price. Give me 10 and I'm backing the blue and gold. I also lean under, but think the number is pretty sharp. With the quality of the defenses that can turn the opponents over, 42.5 doesn't leave much room for cheap scores.

Northwestern -8 over Indiana (thegreek)
-I have to keep riding them. Indiana is terrible, and the team is in turmoil. No faith in the coaching staff.

Michigan State -4 over Michigan(thegreek)
-Michigan State will run all over the Wolverines and show no mercy in this rivalry game.

Penn State -2 over Ohio State(thegreek)
-Penn State is the most impressive team I've seen all year and finds a way to win in a tough environment.

Illinois -2 over Wisconsin
-Whatever the reason, Wisconsin is in a tailspin and Illinois is good enough to go into Madison and win.

Early NFL Sunday..
San Diego -3 vs. Nawlins in London
This one has to go up, so I'll buy it here before it goes to 3.5 or 4. Both teams with travel issues and both coming off road losses. Value here by my numbers. This line says the ratings of these teams are only 3 points apart on a neutral field with no Reggie? Huh? I make the difference 4.5 with Bush and 6.5-7 without him. He has been a huge % of the Saints offense and they died when he went out on Sunday. Chargers losses have been in predictable bad spots on the east coast. No disadvantage here as both teams have to travel here. Rare NFL spot where the situation seems equal. But Reggie's injury is a big factor...much bigger than most any injury to any non-QB in the league. Better team wins and covers.

We were both wrong. I checked that three times before posting the thread.

You forgot, Stanford +2.5 L, they lost by three to UCLA.
I counted your Florida Atlantic pick over W. Kentucky as the Fla.Intl. score which they lost to Troy.

In conclusion, your record this week should be 15-6. 8)

Saturday stuff
Wake Forest/Miami Florida Under 42
Both teams struggle to score...well Miami does most of the time when their opponents aren't giving them points.

Oklahoma/Kansas State Under 71
KSU really sucks on offense.

Virginia Tech/Florida State Under 44
VT is even worse. Horrendous offensively. And FSU can be bad too against good defenses.

Penn State -2½ @ Ohio State
This might be the ONLY time I bet a road favorite all year. I lost going against OSU last week, but I'm still unconvinced.

From thegreek.com:

Boise State (-7) over San Jose St.
Boise State looking to stay on a roll.

Michigan State (-4) over Michigan
The Wolverines are just terrible so I look for MSU to run all over UM.

Penn State (-2) over Ohio State
I believe the Nittany Lions are the best team in the Big 10.

Oklahoma (-18) over Kansas State
The Sooners are too much for KSU.

Buffalo (-1) over Miami
I know it's an intra-division home dog, but the Bills should squeak by.

Baltimore / Oakland (Under 36.5)
No offense for either team, plus the Ravens defense equals low scoring.

Go SJSU. Makes me nervous that every tout in toutdom is on them tonight. And Chus too. :D Hope they're right. Not the right price for me to play them except for pocket change, but I'll be rooting for em.

San Jose State State - Boise OVER 40
I thought the number was sharp when it opened at 44. I leaned under, but not at that number. Four points later, I have to go the other way and take the value. Yes, these are two good defensive teams and the straight cap is lean under. But if the number was sharp at open at 40, then that's four points of value at 40. Contrarian.
