Everybody pick a driver each week. Nobody picks the same guy, picking is first come first served. The thread will be posted weekly AFTER QUALIFYING. Then, starting with the first Chase race at New Hampshire, the posters shall be assigned to the driver corresponding in the NEXTEL CUP standings. They keep this driver for the duration of the Chase. The players will also get to pick a driver out of the Chase to make things more interesting. And rack up the points for the championship. For the second driver picked each week, you cannot pick one of the leftover chase drivers. The chase drivers not picked are effectively dead to us. Until they wreck out your guy and then you'll wish they were someplace else. Standings Pts. If he's available, I'll take David Ragan and the #6 Triple "A" Ford Sunday at Texas. I think David's on the verge of actually winning a race, and this might be a good spot for him to take the checkered flag. Meanwhile, as for the "Chase for the Cup" participants, all indications are Jimmie Johnson & the #48 Lowe's Chevy are really, really close to taking his third straight Sprint Cup title. If Jimmie wins Sunday, it may defeat the purpose of tuning into the last 2 races November 9th at Phoenix & November 16th at Homestead, FL. He leads my guy, Carl Edwards, and the #99 Office Depot Ford now by 183 points with 3 races left. The time has come, NASCAR fans, to tweak the "Chase for the Cup" format. |

These were the thoughts of some of the drivers Sat. before the race. http://www.nascar.com/2008/news/headlin ... index.html "We've worked very hard," Johnson said, "and I know everybody has listened to me over the last 34 weekends talking about how hard we've worked this year. At the end of the day, we all know we didn't get off to a good start. And we had to work very hard to be in this position. We're here and we're proud of it." "Realistically and historically, he's the champion," Kyle Busch said. "I guess you would have more drama than with the old points system with Jimmie being able to battle all the way back and catch up and surpass myself and Carl. Whatever [NASCAR] wants to do -- it's their sand box." Burton said the Chase addressed longtime complaints associated with the previous point system. "It rewards winning," he said of the Chase. "It rewards running up front, it rewards leading laps, it does everything that you guys [the media] all thought was really cool. When somebody does it better than everybody else, don't talk about how the point system is messed up, talk about how good they're doing. That's what the focus ought to be." Dale Earnhardt Jr., Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammate, agreed: "In my opinion, the Chase does what it's supposed to do. There's no real true formula that anybody in this room could come up with to make the perfect Chase every time. I think that you've just got to give Jimmie and those guys credit for whatever they've been able to accomplish up to this point. They're a dominant team in this sport at this time. You can't handicap an individual for being great." |

His #42 Havoline/Wrigley's Dodge has only 1 win in 2 seasons on the Sprint Cup circuit, and I believe it came on the road course at Sonoma last summer. That's quite a drought for a guy who I think was really, really good in Formula 1. |

As for the contest, it's far from over with two weeks left. Using the Cuyler Modified Scoring System, the max points for each week is 370 if your drivers finish 1st and 2nd. Both must lead a lap and one of the two must lead the most laps. The min points for each week is 71 if your drivers finish 42nd and 43rd with neither driver leading a lap. This has almost been done a couple times. Darren - Tinley Park wrote: Things are getting a little tighter around here . Darren, I think it's between Jimmie Johnson & the #48 Lowe's Chevy & Carl Edwards' and the #99 Office Depot Ford for the Sprint Cup title with 2 races left. Unfortunately, Jimmie won the first race this season where they're headed next Sunday, Phoenix. I heard "Jurko" last week on ESPN 1000's "Motorsports Weekly" segment voice his frustration with the current "Chase for the Cup" format in the wake of Jimmie's surprising 2nd place finish 2 weeks ago in Atlanta, all the yellow cautions down the stretch, and the likelihood that it's his third straight Sprint Cup title to lose. I know NASCAR is planning some scheduling changes next season, plus I read that Kansas might be awarded a second Sprint Cup race, and that Kentucky also wants one in the near future. I'm not sure what they can do, but if Jimmie wins Sunday or finishes 9th or better, what's the point in tuning into the last race of the year in Homestead, FL November 16th? |

Don't assume a top ten finish for JJ at Phoenix. Although if he does well and has one of those only needs to finish 35th at the last race, it will still be worth watching. If the title is secured, the race will be crazy. Think about it, this is the last race. There are a lot of guys that need a good finish and some know it's there last ride in the car. So expect lots of contact racing. |
