I haven't been in a league since I was 11, but back then I remember that I threw a hook and had a specially-drilled ball for that style. What can you recommend if I would like to re-learn how to throw that hook. Any ball type/weight recommendations, or brands? Thx, -PP I promise that I will get to this today. |

What can you recommend if I would like to re-learn how to throw that hook. Any ball type/weight recommendations, or brands? Thx, -PP I am not up on all of the newest products, but a good place to start would be here: http://www.bowlingball.com/ They have balls, and any accessories that you might need. You can read up on the new balls, and see which ones do what. When you make a purchase, bring it in to the pro shop at your house, and tell him what you want the ball to do, and he can drill it accordingly. You could start by talking to the pro shop, and looking at what they have for sale. Buy a ball online, it will be much cheaper. The house where I play tends to dry out a lot by the second and third games, so I had it drilled to roll longer, and snap at the end, as opposed to hooking earlier. I can make it hook more if I need it to. As far as weight, go with a 16 lb if you can throw it. I prefer a heavier ball, to smash through the pins. Some pros now have switched to 15, so they can get more revolutions on the ball, to cut through the oil patterns that they face. |

Pro shop will be happy to drill it for you if you bring your own raw ball. Especially if you don't have a relationship with a pro shop guy, there's no real reason to buy from them at their markups. A lot of people like having a second ball made of plastic to hit the 10 pin (7 pin for a lefty.) Because the strike ball you get will be designed to hook, it can be difficult to pick up that pin with your normal ball. These are very cheap, but you can also get some pretty cool ones (the ones with the Bears logos or rose embedded in it ala Kingpin are made of plastic stock.) If you get one of these, get a ball holder too... this is a ring that you can put under the ball return (or by your table, or wherever) that will keep the ball steady, but remain accessible and out of the main ball return (if you are on a 4 man league, that's 8 balls in the ball return minimum, and if there are a few other spare balls in there, the thing can fill up quickly.) After they drill it, they'll let you throw a few frames to try it out. Obviously don't worry as much about your results here as you do the fit... they will typically drill it slightly on the tight side and loosen it up for you if it feels awkward. Depending how advanced you want to get, you can get all sorts of things to put in the finger holes. Please do not get your ball drilled at a Sports Authority or Dick's or some place like that. They don't know what they are doing, and with a 14-16 pound weight swinging from your arm anywhere from 15-20 times a game (x3 games for a league), you don't want that repetitive motion screwing anything up. I say this from experience, being a stupid 22 year old trying to save some cash and now having a messed up knuckle on my middle finger. |
