I will normally put all my college plays in the same thread, but when a local team is involved, perhaps others have thoughts and I'll create a separate thread for discussion. Saturday Night DePaul -1, -115 @ Bradley When last we saw Bradley, they were making a nice run in the NCAA Tournament. But that team had future NBA draft pick O'Bryant, along with Sommerville, Wright and Bennett. The four of them combined for 50 ppg and O'Bryant and Sommerville were the stars of that team. They are gone and Bradley's only returning starter is its solid point guard Ruffin. The other guys surrounding him were mostly role players last year. DePaul is loaded, with almost everyone back from last year's team. They have size, versatility, and quickness. And last year's starters return at four positions, along with several other guys who got large minutes also returning. Mejia, Clarke and Chandler are probably the best three players on the floor in this one. It's very, very tough to win on the road in the barn in Peoria, but this somewhat inexperienced Bradley team will likely struggle a bit early in the season. Last year, DePaul opened its season with its new coach by losing at home to a veteran Bradley team. It's a new year and the situation is nearly exactly the opposite. After a year of Wainwright's coaching, I expect DePaul's defensive intensity and overall cohesiveness on the offensive end to be much better out of the box. I don't like laying points on the road, but I think if these teams were to play a month from now, DePaul might be a 6 point road favorite...as I believe DePaul's potential power rating is about 10 points higher than Bradley's potential. I think DePaul has a chance to be the best team in Illinois this year, and it's been years since we could say that...back when the Ray Meyer-coached Demons were better than the Illini. They start to show it by opening the season by winning one on the road. |

Friday, November 17 Stanford -8 vs. Northwestern Don't let NU's win over DePaul fool you. This team has a long way to go in several areas. Stanford is every bit as disciplined at NU but has quicker guards in the backcourt, better shooters and much bigger and more talented big guys inside. Georgia Southern +14 @ Illinois Illini missing three guys tonight, including their leading scorer Jamar Smith. Georgia Southern is a good shooting team that played Duke tough for about 30 minutes the other night. In fact, with the Illini's suspensions (McBride) and injuries (Smith and Randle), the team that takes the floor tonight will be young, inexperienced and ripe for a possible big upset. Not sure GSU will beat Illinois, but I do believe it will be close. |
