Not only was Secretariat a 2 second faster time, it was when the 'edge' might not have been so great and I would just think that a horse, just like a person, having nobdy pushing them , going to the wire all alone, might not be pushing the pace so much...as Pharoah was being pushed somewhat

WSj shows both running the race, side to side

someone needs to superimpose secretariat on to the 2015 video itself

but it looks like pharoah would have ended up a length or two ahead for 2nd place in 1973.

Can't superimpose him on the 2015 because he was so far ahead of where the screen was. Could do the opposite and superimpose AP on the '73 footage so you can see him run down the home stretch way, way, way, way back there with the rest of them.

Thats what I thought it was going to be, but they did a good job of showing the times and the camera angle is the same.

You would think this is the perfect thing for a drone camera?

Sounds good to me, except I could see it careening into the pack and turning it into a demolition derby ... bad optics, as they say.

I wouldn't say American Pharoah was pushed. He was well in hand and geared down going past the wire. The object isn't really to go as fast as possible. Great horses just go fast because they are fast. I'm pretty sure Ron Turcotte would tell you it wasn't his intention to go 1.09.4 for the first six furlongs of a twelve furlong race. Secretariat was just at his absolute best that day and ran right out of his skin.

I think the track may have been faster at Belmont when Secretariat won than it was last Saturday. There was less cushion. But Secretariat's Belmont is widely considered the greatest race in the history of the American turf. And he came back in the Man O' War on grass and ran an unbelievable 2.24.4.

What Pharoah did in his context is every bit as impressive as Secretariat through his Triple Crown. AP is obviously not going to race as much.

This is really just good talk for argument. I think every generation has its superlative horse and which one you think is greatest may depend on your age. My grandfather, my father, and I argued about Man O' War, Citation, and Secretariat. I think it's fair to add American Pharoah to that conversation.

i guess its a big deal and all, but american fagget was 2.6 seconds slower than secretariet

when secretariat died, they cut him open to find his heart over twice the size of the average race horse. thats why he was so fast.

It's funny that everyone knows McLovin but nobody knows his real name.

Secretariat is dead. Picking the winner of this race should not be difficult.
