Those hole-in-ones at 16 are pretty cool. I'm glad the (sometimes) stuffy announcers are mostly ok with it.

Well, circumstances like this past weekend work out for some guys, like Tom Hoge. I don't think we can be sure he would not have won this tournament against any and all other competition, but he played everyone who was there this weekend. (It seems to me that Speith's career started similarly at the John Deere, against lower marquee players.)

His Mom was a teacher at my high school, his father was the guy I replaced in my first ever paying job. They must be so proud of their son.

That is very cool... He still lives in Fargo, ND which is certainly rare for these guys. Great to see someone like him stick with it and finally get rewarded.

Tom's Dad Chuck was CEO of Melroe/Bobcat, based in Fargo. When Chuck left his Aunt/Uncle's farm to become a multi-sport college star, I was hired to replace him. Big switch from 6'4" stud college athlete to me, a 5'8" fat junior high kid, but, they adjusted after a while.

Tom's career hasn't been the rocket ship ride of Speith, but I can appreciate the success of a grinder. and hope he continues to play well.

Had another solid week in AZ.

I hate to admit that I was a little appalled by it and thought it was ridiculous and over the top. Probably because I am getting older but I thought they were lucky that no one got hit in the face with a 3/4 full beer can and was curious if there was any damage to the greens from any cans hitting. Just slowed down an already slow event. My step daughter was there this weekend and suggested we come down and go sometime. I think after the Masters this spring I likely won't be attending a golf event for a while but I told her that is one event I never plan on going to. 200k people a day is way too many and I thought it was a little annoying to hear all the people in the background. I'll go back to keeping kids off my lawn now... thanks.

Also, happy to see Scheffler win his first event. I didn't see the end but watched enough of the tournament to know he was making a lot of birdies.

It certainly is over the top, but it's one hole at one tournament a year. If it starts spilling over to other events they should crack down.

That is kind of where I ended up falling on it after the hole in one yesterday.

I agree. One tournament/hole a year I love it and think it makes great theatre. Since there hadn't been an ace in like six years, its not like it was a planned beer shower. It was an impromptu celebration on Saturday which to me made it all the more memorable.

The last two hours or so and the sudden death at WM was much more exiting than all but two plays of the first half of the Super Bowl. Congrats to Scheffler. He seems to have the stuff to win a ton of tournaments. Really felt for Theegala at the 17th. Was pulling for him bigtime but he had a great showing all week. Was happy to see Koepka fade.

The Genesis at Riviera CC this week is always a fun one to watch. Good field and excellent course. Number 10 is one of the best short par 4 holes we will see all year. That playoff last year between Homa and Finau was awesome.

Tiger stating in his press conference that his rehab is not going as well as he'd hoped. Can putt, chip, and hit short irons but not much more than that. When he does play it is always in a cart which he says is easy but not up for the walking.

Not Back

 As MANY know, I am not a big Tiger fan. I do hope he can recover enough to play a couple tournaments here and there and get a proper send off. He deserves to walk up 18 at Augusta (even if its on Friday afternoon) to a huge ovation.

He's said for a while now that the best he will be able to do is play a limited schedule. Said it again yesterday so he must think he will eventually get to that point.

Seeing pictures and video this morning of a complete loss of the Main Clubhouse at Oakland Hills this morning, lots of history went up in flames there.

In four years he can pick and choose between the PGA Tour and Champions Tour.

The Masters might be one of the toughest for him to get back to simply because of the terrain. As TBone attest, outside of the practice area its tough to find a flat spot on that course.

I wonder if he will play in the par 3 contest at Augusta.

Looks like a big fire at Oakland Hills. Yikes!

I was commenting on the size of the fire, not breaking news!

Yeah, it was a damn blaze. They said it was built in the 20's. Can't imagine the memorabilia that was in there and lost.

I saw on Saturday Nantz went at Woods pretty hard trying to get him to tip his hand about Augusta. Tiger didn't say anything one way or the other but mentioned he would be there and that he would be physically able to play the par 3. I didn't watch as much of the tournament as I hoped this weekend because honestly it didn't seem all that competitive. Definitely a fun course to see on TV though. After the leader holed out for eagle on 11 I tuned out until the last couple of holes and when Morikawa missed his putt on 18 I went to racing to see the end.

Forget the golf part of it. If Tiger can't play 18 without a cart at this point I don't see how he will be able to walk around Augusta for 4-5 straight days. As you can attest, once you leave the practice area its tough to find a flat spot on that course.

I agree with you overall Frank. If he is understating his condition and came in playing I would be shocked but that is the kind of shit that Woods thrives on. A 5x winner coming in as a huge underdog.

For sure. And he's definitely familiar enough with the course to play The Masters with zero practice rounds.

But if that his is first PGA tournament back, I don't think anyone should expect much.

Not the greatest field for The Honda Classic this week. Always interesting to see the guys try to navigate The Bear Trap but otherwise just sort of a ho hum event. Most guys are taking a break with a pretty nice stretch of golf coming up with Arnie's event next week, The Players, Valspar and then the WGC Match Play in Austin, TX.

Yeah when the Players got bumped up, The Honda Classic kinda got the shit end of the stick as far as their field goes.

It is also a brutal course that the players don't really care for, and the wind is always howling out there.

That is true. But look at the field when Rory, Russell Henley, and Fowler won it. A lot better than in recent years.

It gives them the built excuse to miss it, coming from the West Coast, got the Players, Arnold's tournament and the Match Play coming up followed by the Masters. Plenty of other opportunities to play elsewhere.

One of the things I am a big fan of this year is all of the ESPN+ coverage. It is great to have on the background while working and it is on all day.

I'm sure I will watch a bit of it over the weekend. Nice to see Berger back after not feeling great physically. I expect Palmer and Horschel to move up near the top. Maybe Koepka if he can get out of his own way.

Took Berger only 5 holes to blow a 5-shot lead. Interesting to see how the rest of the day plays out.

Anyone else read the Morgan Hoffmann story in Golf Digest this month? I was wondering what happened to him. It's pretty wild.
