I bought my son a fairly nice Callaway driver (XR speed??) He's a lefty. Neither of us are big into golf but we went last summer and had a great time. I don't expect him to become a golf nut but I know
- drivers matter
- renting for lefties is a real pain

He was a bit surprised, but then got a little excited and said, "Dad...this means you'll have to take my golfing next summer". Going to Top Golf this saturday to break it in. Anything to get this kid active.

Played Hermann Park today.

Shot a 97 (Par 70) and had one par and one birdie on the back nine. Closed the round with the birdie on 18. Par 4 and off the tee I pulled it into the left rough. Had some trees to navigate from about 125 out. Stuck it to 18 inches or so. Was a nice way to finish out the round.

One thing that struck me as I looked at my scorecard, I didn't have anything higher than a 7 on there. I can't remember the last time that happened.

Enjoying watching the Presidents Cup tonite—live from Australia on a beautiful, difficult course. USA is down—can they come back?

Plus, nothing else on right now.

Reed EN FUEGO earlier, but cooling off.

Tiger going out getting that first point is huge. Sends a message.

I guess you can file this under finding a silver lining in the shittiest of storm clouds. My hockey/golf buddy from South Bend, his wife passed away a couple months ago. I think I posted about how he had to skip our trip last minute this summer. I was at the funeral and was eating lunch with him afterwards and he tells me that he thinks he's gonna turn his fancy dining room into a golf simulator.

Sure enough, over the weekend he sent me a photo and his dining room is now a fully dedicated golf simulator room. Went all out, even bought a gaming PC so he can get all the courses. Got a projector and launch monitor set up over the weekend.

Yeah planning it at the funeral luncheon is sort of odd.

wasn't planning it at the funeral. Just mentioned in passing as were sitting around talking about how his life is going to be changing. And then less than 2 months later he had it done. He's got 3 boys in college who all golf so it will get plenty of use. Gives them something to do this winter during the holidays rather than sit around depressed.

Today was definitely the last round of the year. Shot 84 and finished par-birdie-par. Not a bad way to end things.

Hey Tbone, Furious, etc...

I got a nice new Callaway pullcart for Christmas, as next season I plan to walk as MANY rounds as I can provided the weather cooperates. What kind of shoes do you recommend? Is it worth it to buy two pairs and alternate? I have a pair of Addidas current that I like, but they aren't the best for walking a full 18.

I got a pair of Puma Ignite shoes at the end of last year. Extremely comfortable.

Are you a walker, Franky? I know Tbone walks a ton, and Furious does at times.

I don't carry or push my clubs, but when I'm riding in a cart I mostly walk from shot to shot. So, no, I'm not walking the full 18 holes.

Definitely something leather/waterproof, especially with early morning rounds. I wear Adidas because they fit me really well for running & golf shoes and I usually get the prior season's higher-end model. Budget and mid-priced shoes are meh, especially for walking.

I recommend something with a reasonably substantial sole as opposed to the more casual models. It's wise to have a couple pairs to alternate and let the leather dry 24-48 hours. Furious is a bigfan of cedar shoe trees.

Thanks.

I figure I would go to store and try on Adidas, Etonic, Footjoy, Nike, etc and get the size down and then order online. I can get another season out of my current shoe and I'll use those for 9 holes or when I know I'm taking a cart (rain, 95 degree temps, etc)

I got a par3 bag for Christmas. Planning on playing the Grayslake course quite a bit this year. I'm going to focus on 9 holes and short courses and then build up to 18. I'm typically wiped out between 12-16, then rally for the last two holes. Gotta break 100 this year!

A par 3 bag would be nice. There are a couple executive and par 3 courses near me as well. Maybe even a used junior bag would suffice.

I'm going to get back into golf in 2020 after taking the last decade off due to various health issues and work travel cutting into my free time. Starting 3/1 I'm only going to be working Tue-Wed-Thu most weeks with a few remote teleconferences on Mon/Fri, so I'm looking to take advantage of a 12-month golfing climate (it's generally in the high 50s all winter, good enough for 9 with a 1:30 tee time) and play 18 holes a week.

Question: As I'm rebuilding what was a shitty game anyway (my best handicap would have been a 26 back in the late 90s when I was playing 30 rounds a year) and I get paired with a twosome or threesome, would you consider it poor form to not use the tee box and just drop from the center of the fairway at 250 yards away and hit 5-iron+7-iron+wedge to the green? I hate slow play, and I hate being the cause of slow play even more. I'm fine with limiting myself with 3 irons and 2 putts per hole and the occasional mulligan and keeping things moving.

I'm planning on retiring my 20 year old 7-wood and my 12-13 year old 3-iron/4-iron and replacing it with a hybrid with a 4-iron loft, but I want to get 10-15 rounds in first because I may then decide to replace my entire set of clubs.
