HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE LEFT THE SCRIPT!!!!
That is so true. So true.
But isn't that the problem? He kind of had. Corporate is too PC now. More and more and more over the years, to the point that somebody like Mike is gonna just get in trouble.
I think in many ways he held onto the script much too long, couldn't adapt to the new vanilla way, and wasn't a good listen as he was trying to reel himself in without much success.
I mean ya. Don Rickles. The whole bit. Mike grew up with that stuff. It's entrenched within him. I'd be willing to bet though that he's come A LONG ways on his actual thoughts on ethnic groups.
I think in most cases, he's just been happy go lucky be dumby, and then has said one of those things that get him in trouble.
Years ago it was funny. It's STILL funny off the radio. Many racial, sexual, stuff like that jokes are damn hilarious amongst friends, as long as it doesn't turn into Elmhurst Steve.
Mike just sometimes forgets that he had an audience of like 50 million on a daily basis.
His real problem was he forgot his audience loved the talk about Hot Dog Stands, Beef Joints and Greasy Spoon Burger Joints...BECAUSE HIS AUDIENCE WENT TO THOSE PLACES FREQUENTLY....His audience is not in Vegas twice a month or at a Gibson's location twice a week.....The minute this guy started NAME DROPPING....you just knew he was getting comped....SO THERE GOES THE STREET CRED WITH THE ORIGINAL AUDIENCE...."Hey, look at me, I go to Gibson's" ain't cutting it with an audience that may get there once a year.
Harry Caray could drop names all night long....he wasn't FROM HERE.....He wasn't EVERYMAN from Edgewater, Chicago.
