Pekin High School in Illinois used the team name Pekin Chinks from the 1930s until 1980. Their mascots were a male and female student dressed as Chinese persons wearing traditional Chinese attire. Guess the ESPN reporter was behind the times not knowing the term was derogatory. It's not like it's an ancient Chinese secret.

I know the term should be obvious to anyone who is employed because of their dextirity with words, but this seems a little bit like the government employee who correctly used the term niggardly. It probably isn't smart to use the phrase in either context but both, on their faces, have meaning completely independent of the race.

Factually speaking, the ESPN reporter wasn't fired from the "Worldwide Leader". His name is Max Bretos, who can be found on ESPNEWS as a sports anchor on ESPN's 24/7 sports news network. He used the term in an interview he had with longtime Knicks' great and veteran analyst on MSG Network, Walt "Clyde" Frazier. This after Anthony Fedrico, the 28 year-old editor posted the headline initially on ESPN Mobile. While both guys should've known better, here's what happened as a result of the controversy:

Fedrico was fired by ESPN brass over the weekend, while Bretos, whose wife happens to be Asian-American, was suspended 30 days without pay for using that phrase in reference to Knicks' point guard Jeremy Lin.

Just so happened.
