If those quotes are genuine, his perspective is a very healthy one to have.

He has 22 months of paychecks coming in and has time to line-up his next gig. Why not have that attitude?

Quite the connection here....lasted like 5 mins because his skin was too thin.

When you have a young son to support, are in your mid 40's and are about to get married I don't think you have a whole lot of wiggle room to be an ass about it. This not an industry where its smart to be a problem child and burn bridges. That said, I think its genuine.

It's funny because you're right, but Mac has burned more bridges than anyone alive.

Yeah but Mac is a proven commodity so he gets more leeway . Spiegs is pretty much a never was radio-wise.

I wonder what his contract requires him to do in order to remain on payroll. Is there a clause that allows him to work as he wants or not at all if the show is cancelled....like it was? If not can't they just say you are going to work all these random spots when we TELL you to?

He has the better part of 2 years to carve out a new niche. Larry took his demotion and turned it into whatever the hell it is that he does. I would have to assume they will give him some cubs post game opportunities and if its as good as it should be then he will probably do that often. Eventually he better run Jules and her cohost right out the fucking door of the host side of the studio.

Mac also brings the ratings that guarantee a bonus check for any PD

He's not that good. Not really better than Goff at all.

He’s miles better than Goff.

Opinions vary

I'd say old weekend fill in Goff was better than Spiegel. Recent Goff was different.

I don't like Spiegel's cadence/voice though.

It's not admirable that he eventually treated Parkins well once he finally got it through his head that Parkins was a key part of the future with or without him.

Now he can pretend he "becomes" the Beatles full time.

This is 100% spot on.

Also, it should be pointed out that he took a lot of time off for the job he clearly liked more. He quit doing a baseball show on the weekends he supposedly was good at because of it. He had to call in sick multiple times from voice issues directly relating to his other job.

Now, he was "allowed" to do that but when you have a job like his those kind of things make you less likely to survive big shakeups.

The guy weathered multiple shakeups, and his performance was trending upwards through multiple partners, AND he just got fresh paper. A loyal radio veteran with ratings success should certainly weather a storm brought on by the declining ratings of others. So what he might be prickly and a bit of a diva about his singing? He had results where it mattered, until those things apparently stopped mattering.

Now I don't know what his deal is like, maybe he refused to work with Bernstein in middays, and they're doing him a solid instead of firing him. If we get wind of that, I will downgrade Spiegel's treatment from "hosed" to "kinda shitty, but you gotta do what you gotta do to get by". However, absent that, the guy had all the things you supposedly need to be a daypart mainstay, and they forced him out for Connor McDoink.

His results were bad before Parkins saved him.

That's not true. In November of 2016, Spiegel & Goff were 1st in middays in the key demo.

http://sportsradiopd.com/2016/11/a-huge ... -stations/

And in the Fall books of 2015 S&G were 2nd in the key demo with a 5.1 and easily beating the WMVP competition, who had a 3.8.

http://sportsradiopd.com/2015/12/sports ... e-country/

Spiegel was a ratings success (though not as dominant) years before Parkins arrived at the station.

So, BRick, if Spiegel performed well in the ratings before Parkins' arrival, and performed even better with Parkins, what exactly justifies Spiegel's ouster?

What, is he fucking your sister or something?

Look, there's no way that they fire/demote JUST JASON. Jimmy D doesn't want Jesse Jackson sitting in front of his office every day.

So Spiegs had to be demoted. Hell Doug Buffone got demoted when they changed the morning show, and he ended up as a beloved figure who worked on 670 until the week he died (except for that little webio excursion). Not to go all Beardown, but why would they give him paper first?

He gets a paid vacation for a couple of months for being a good soldier, then when baseball season is in full swing he'll do some fill-in work for Mac when he goes to cottage, and then eventually they'll find a smaller role for him or maybe he takes over nights from Holmes (who went to nights from a failed mid-day stint). And if he sucks in those 22 months, then he'll get launched for good.

The guy who is hosed in Rozner, because Spiegs is going to eat a lot of his guest hosting slots once June comes around.

Spiegel notched another win over the competition in his final quarterly book for the station, and posted a share that bested the afternoon drive show on his own station at the time, one that would have been just one tenth of a point behind the afternoon drive competition.

He. Got. Hosed.

Quote:
670 The Score shook up its lineup in late March, so the new shows are yet to be measured for a full quarter, but for those who are no longer part of the station’s weekday plans, they can at least take solace in the fact that they finished up strong. The winter book found The Score ahead of their market competitor ESPN 1000 in a number of categories. Among Men 25-54 in the M-F 6a-7p demographic, The Score finished nine tenths of a point ahead of ESPN 1000. One year earlier they trailed their competitor by two tenths of a point. In the M-F 6a-7p demographic a similar story occurred. 670 finished a little more than a point ahead of 1000. Last year at this time 1000 was six tenths of a point ahead. In the head to head battles, The Score gained wins from Mully and Hanley (7.5, 1st) over Golic and Wingo (3.2, 13th) in mornings and Spiegel and Parkins (5.1, 4th) over Kap and Company and 1-hour of Carmen and Jurko. ESPN 1000 remained ahead though between 1p-6p led by an hour of Carmen and Jurko and a strong four hour effort from Waddle and Silvy. The station’s two shows combined to deliver a 5.2, 3rd place finish, seven tenths of a point ahead of Bernstein and Goff which turned in a 4.5, good enough for 5th place. As is the case during most quarters, sports radio in the windy city remains alive and well.

Keep in mind, these figures include a month-ish of the new shows as well as early season Cubs baseball, which could explain the afternoon slot on WSCR beginning to close the gap on the WMVP competition. And with Bernstein & McDoink doing their...thing...for part of this book, Spiegel's final numbers may have actually been more impressive.

The quarter is 1/4-3/28, right? Shouldn't have been too much baseball in there, I think what you see is what you get. But Spiegel absolutely got hosed and I'm sure it was because they couldn't only get rid of Goff without having "community leaders" go up their ass like a bottle rocket.

I’ve said it before but I disagree with those attributing the changes to ratings or personality differences. IMO, Speigel’s attitude wasn’t the reason he was booted. DeCastro wanted his 2 guys in the prime time lineup and Goff and Speigel were the victims of a numbers game.

No, I don't think Mac is back in afternoons without Jason Goff's Cavalcade of Indignation and LeBron Worship chasing the audience into the dull but loving arms of 1000.

Spiegel could've had a nice seat waiting for him when Mulligan retires, which is rumored to happen in the next few years. His decision to be salty over the recent weeks may have soured that for him.

Granted, they did say on Can't Do It that Spiegel would probably fill in for Mac when he is gone for his fishing trip some point in late summer.

This is spot on.

Jimmy deCastro values/rewards loyalty.

Before he moved on from WGN Radio, he got Steve Cochran a big new contract and threw a lifesaver to Roe Conn from the WLS sinking ship.

It would have been interesting to see what "could have been" for Ben Finfer if he didn't have his last day on-air meltdown on The Game...
