I have to congragulate Rodgey on his getting the fill in radio gig on Sox games. All his loyal Williams/Reinsdorf butt kissing finally paid off. He defended Kenny, Jerry and Ozzie to no end on his show.

Rump Ranger Rongey has to kiss ass - they're the Flagship - they're the beholden rightsholder!

Ranger says he has never been told by anybody what to say and what not to say. I believe him.

I also believe that Ranger monitors his self. I think there is an implied standard for his position. It's not spoken to him but he feels it. He self-censors himself. I think he does couch somethings at times. The "Dye can't pinch hit cuz it's his day off" was wrong by Ranger. Hey, he's allowed to have some wrong thoughts. Everybody does.

Ranger's position is understandable. I accept it. He's trying to stay employed. He does criticize the team. He won't take cheap shots like B&B and other shows. Who cares? Get over it everybody. You watch the games. You can take your cheap shots in your family room. Or you can post them here.

Is Chris Rodgey like a cross between Rogers and Rongey? Steve Goffman has a new friend.

First of all, Chris RONGEY is his name, not Chris RODGEY! Chris has done a very good job this season, not only with the pre & postgame shows on 670 "The SCORE" & the Chicago White Sox Radio Network, but with the impromptu work he's done during the games themselves on very short notice. He's not afraid to criticize the team when they suck. He's also had to deal with "meatball fans" who have cranked him lately, and for his part, Rongey's dealt with it as best as he can. Then again, being a "butt kisser" seems to be part of the station's broadcast rights with a sports team, such as the White Sox & WSCR. There's only so much they can criticize without kissing butt...

Like I've said before, when criticism is warranted I'll place it where necessary. But, unlike some talk show hosts, I choose to be respectful when doing so. There's a right way to criticize.

And Beardown, I never said Dye couldn't pinch hit. I said he's not going to pinch hit in the middle innings when he has an off day. If he does that, what's the point of an off day? Where do you draw the line? Why not pinch hit him in the 4th? Why not just put him in the starting lineup anyway? 8th or 9th inning is one thing, the 6th is another.

I think when resting a star player you give your team until the 6th to win the game or have a nice lead. At that point you try to win. If it means Dye gives you the best chance by pitch hitting then you do it.

I didn't hear how you said it Ranger. That's my thoughts on how you do it.

Think about it. Pinch hitting for Thome is still a day off kind of. He would be the DH. He doesn't have to take the field. It's just one at bat. Maybe two.

Now, Ozzie didn't do it cuz he didn't want to hurt the pride of a Jim Thome. I understand that. That thinking will stop if Thome continues to struggle.

Beardown, from all I've heard it's generally accepted that the 7th begins the "end" of the game / last three frames / however you want to put it. The 6th inning has been generally considered the last inning that most starting pitchers are effective, so I understand where you're coming from in terms of the inning's relative "importance," but you're not going to put a guy who has a scheduled or emergency day off into the game that early.

If Dye bats in the top of the 6th, he takes the field for the final three innings and potentially hits once more in the game. You won't find many single regular season games that have enough on the line to play a guy under those circumstances - especially on the road - when the player went into the game thinking he'd be able to get some rest. Again, especially on the road. I had no problem at all with the move.

He wouldn't have taken the field. The situation called for him to pinch hit for Thome with 2 guys on. He would have been the DH for the rest of the game.

You can win the game right there. You have 2 guys on. Get your best hitter up there. You have a chance for a 3-run homer with your best hitter. Take advantage of that.

You're also talking about a guy (Dye) who is no star player. Relative to RF's around the league, he's pretty average. Not only that, he was a late bloomer with a low ceiling, and he hit his prime in the 2005 season. There is no indication that he'll ever match that performance again in his career.

No, he's hitting on whoever Chris Rodgey is.

Plus, didn't Ozzie say "No more Mr. Nice Guy this year."

He's the fucking manager and he'll do what he thinks is right to win. That he doesn't care about who he offends on the team.

That would have been a perfect spot for Ozzie to show he's not fucking around. But no, he felt for Thome in that spot. Wasn't gonna embarrass him by pinch hitting for him.

Rongey has the worst job in the world. He has to talk to sox fans after every game. Imagine that? He is underpaid and I give him props for not going off on the dumbasses every segment. Just listen to some of the idiots that call in to the postgame shows.
These are the smart ones, they actually have the skills to dial a phone. They qualiify as MENSA members of Sux-nation.

It isn't about trying to avoid players being embarrassed. It's about giving your veteran hitter (who is coming of a nice year, by the way) a chance to turn it around. He's not worried about hurting their feelings. Does Thome even seem like the kind of person to have his feelings hurt anyway? That's just absurd, Beardown.

Chris, absurdity is Beardown's middle name.
I seem to remember him predicting 110 wins for the Sox in 2006 after a hot April. Just a typical Sox fan who acts like a Cub fan but thinks he is god's gift to baseball analysis.
A pathetic loser, but at least he doesn't lick Mac's sac.

It's not absurd.

It certainly went through Ozzie's mind. Yes Ranger, Thome strikes me as a guy who would be offended. Maybe he wouldn't bitch about it but he would be embarrassed. Hell, I would think less of Thome if he wasn't embarrassed. You should be if you have any pride.

Don't tell me about Thome's good year last year. I'm talking about right here and now.

Hey Ranger, I'll admit that situation was a gray area. I'm not pissed that Ozzie didn't pinch hit for him. It's not an "absolute" situation. For many reasons. You make a point. That was a spot for Thome to come out of it and get his confidence back.

I'm glad you remembered that. That was a horrible prediction. I think I made it before the season. Not in April. Doesn't matter. I was wrong. I was stupid.

Well, last year has everything to do with it because the indication is that the ability is probably still there if he was getting it done just last year. Therefore, you expect him to break out of it at some point. That could be any day...or it could be never. No way to know.

And if Thome strikes you as the kind of guy that would be offended, then it's obvious your perception is well off. The only thing he's upset about is his performance.

It was actually May 24, 2006. Here's the thread, read through it, Beardown. Tall Midget gave you a tough time about it. He is a dick, though.
You stuck to your guns, I'll give you that. Pretty absurd though, huh?

Ranger, once again, it would offend me if he wasn't offended. I would hope he would be offended. Don't you get that? He should be. I don't think I'm saying anything out of line. Any star player, with pride, should be offended if he were pinch hit for in a big spot.

The problem is not when Dye is pinch hitting, but, instead, that he has to pinch hit for the team's DH.
