It's always been a little noisy, but it's getting so bad in Grayslake that I'm switching over to the web stream. Wonder if the antennae's been getting whacked, these past storms...

Actually, their signal has always been horrible for me, granted Im damn near close to Wisconsin. Amazing that they can't put a better signal out.

Aren't AM frequencies supposed to be heard farther distances then FM? I mean you can get that crap on WGN practically half way up the state of wisconsin

Before ESPN Radio took over management of AM 1000 in 1998, Chet Coppock claimed his old "Coppock on Sports" show was being "heard in 38 states and Canada". Although I can't quite explain it, I think they have to purposely lower the signal by FCC rules after 6p. If you have a problem with WMVP's signal, I think you've got to take up the signal issue with the folks in Washington. When "The SCORE" first got started as a "sunrise to sunset" all-sports talk station at AM 820, they tried to get a stronger signal at their original frequency. It wasn't until Diamond Broadcasting sold WSCR and its FM sister station 93XRT were sold to Westinghouse, now known as CBS Radio, in the mid '90s where "THE SCORE" relocated to AM 1160 and once again in 2000 to its current home at AM 670 where the signal strength seemed much stronger than its original home.

I think they get WGN even up in Alaska. That signal is uber strong.

AM1000 is a strange duck in the realm of 50,000-watters. It's a clear channel, which means they should have everything from the Rockies to the Atlantic Ocean to themselves after sundown, as do WLS, WBBM, WSCR, and WGN, but for some reason, their signal has a goofy-ass imbalance wherein it can be heard as far east as Penn State, but can't get west of the Fox River. The rumor I've always heard was that when Amway owned WCFL, they wanted to hear it in Detroit, but that doesn't make sense, because Detroit can hear other Chicago blowtorches just fine, and we can hear theirs (I had the good luck to pick up a Windsor Spitfires game last winter, and the misfortune to hear Mitch Albom), so I don't know. I guess what I'm saying is that 1000 blows goats.

I think our 820 is a daytimer because it has to yield to an 820 in Dallas, I believe. Milwaukee had the same problem with their sports station until February, as 1510 had to move out of the way for a 50,000-watt 1510 out of Nashville.

AM freqs will bounce off higher apmospheric layers, giving it an illusion of having a longer range. It's possible that it could be heard in omaha, but not in the Quad cities, as it could bounce over the quads and come back down around Omaha. Course it's been years since I was in school for these things, and I might have been in altered states during the majority of my lessons, so this might not be right, but it's something like that.

Grayslake's not that far from the border, either. But like I said, it's been getting worse the past 2 weeks or so.

When considering stations, you have to think of their antennae configuration. I think 1160's antennae was wasting signal on Lake Michigan. 820 nowadays has better coverage than when SCR was using the frequency.

That's true. The altered states might also be true.

Genemens,

Am1000 redirects their signal east at a pre-determined time guided by the time of sunset. You can hear the change during the winter months during MJH. The show craps out momentarily when this happens. The signal redirection effort goes back to the WCFL days when they would redirect the signal to their F-federation of L-labor buddies in Michigan and beyond.

When Reinsdorf moved the Sox to the Score, don't you remember him saying he wanted them to be on a station that could be heard in Aurora? No kidding, it's a fact.

ESPN serves a really degraded signal to suburban Chicago residents roughly south of I-80, west of Lisle and north of the Cook County line. It reaches suburban Dyer, Indiana and parts of southern Michigan though. So it has that going for it. Which is nice.

Their engineers and management have known about these problems for years that affect their listener numbers in their Chicago market, yet have never bothered to fix it. You would think that an investment in engineering a better signal would pay for itself in better ratings and higher ad revenues in their target market.

Huh. The signal in my office has deteriorated to the point where my radio can't find 'em anymore. Thankfully we have streaming feed! If only I can teach it not to bring me Tirico/Van Pelt

my signal is great in the garage, shitty on the main stereo, and so-so on the alarm clock.

That can't be accurate. 1000 doesn't come in at all anywhere north of Elkhorn day or night, contrary to what the map indicates.
