Whatever, people get caught up in these overall numbers. A fraction of a number means nothing. Plus WSCR is paying for their overall improvement with the White Sox deal. So they aren't seeing a return on it because they spent to take a fraction lead.

If they are leading, they are leading. If the ratings aren't flawed when they are losing then the ratings can't be flawed when they are winning. MVP has had the Sox and Bulls for years and didn't see an increase in their ratings until the past couple of years.

Nas, that is actually not true. MVP always increased in the summer, even beating SCR once while Mitch was there. The new ratings mean, and they are only a trend, not a real book, is that Sox listnership increased the SCR overall enough to be ahead of MVP.

Mitch and the gang will say that this is great. However, they were counting on a bigger jump than they received. Sox listners should increase their overall numbers by more than this. These are listeners who tune in ONLY to hear the games, and nothing else.

That's what I was trying to say. The Sox actual broadcast put them over the top. Having the Sox doesn't help shows like many people like to beleive.

Well you spend $2.5 Million plus expenses, Yeah I would say a bigger jump might be expected.

Oh, plus you have another $2M + in the mornings?

I would say that the ratings for both stations are lousy. This is when both should be much higher. There is no excuse for numbers this low for either. Maybe sports talk has peaked. Something new has to create an audience, because hearing the same stuff everyday is boring. I don't need to hear every person on each station give their opinions of what's wrong with the Cubs each and every f'ng day. They beat the stories to death and each host and fill in feels we are all waiting breathlessly for their opinions.
Neither station has anything to feel good about and they should be worried that the format has turned stale.

I'm with you Doomed. For a supposed sports town like Chicago, the ratings of both stations are usually always way too low. But I think you and I must be in the minority of the core listeners these stations are trying to reach. A lot of guys on this board have said they want all Chicago guys talking all Chicago sports all the time. And that's what they're getting. In the summer time...that means all baseball, Cubs and Sox all the time. Yawn yawn yawn. And you are right on it that every freaking show is Ground Hog Day. Which is why people like you and I don't listen to most of these shows. But apparently, the core audience, which appears to be about 1.4 at each station, is getting what they want because they are still listening. So the rest of us go elsewhere to get what we want.

Coast, I think you have it a little wrong. I want local focus on national sports. I love football discussion from guys like Steve Silverman who can break down the college and pro game equally well and then becomes a great talent evaluator in the off season. I have no idea why he does not get more times.

I love the national weekend shows during football season.

What I absolutely do not like is regular national weekday shifts. They tend to focus on the most populated areas, namely New York and New England. They do this in every sport.

I guess what I really want is a local host with national contacts who can place my favorite teams in a proper perspective. HFC used to do a great job of this during the football season in interviewing reporters from around the league.

Coast,
These numbers are abysmal compared to other years. People are losing interest in hearing the same crap everyday. As you said, almost every show is like Groundhog Day.
A 2.9 combined, shows that 2 stations is looking like one too many.

I don't have a favorite team in this town so prefer a bit broader perspective, GD. But I could even live with that if that were what we were getting. But you're living in the past. You cited something the HFC USED to do. I liked HFC when they interviewed reporters and coaches from all over also. But HFC hasn't been on the air in 7 years or more. MJH and even B&B are very different shows. The interviews we're getting instead are regular redundant visits with local coaches and players like Cooper, Dempster and Walker. Take away the personalities of the hosts and you are left with pretty much the same content -- and even the same interviews -- on all the shows. If show X has an interview with today's Sox or Cubs hero, you can bet show Y on the other station will get the same interview the same day or the next day latest. And vice versa. That's not competition. That's a bunch of lazy hosts and producers with thin rolodexes who think reading the morning papers, listening to the competition and going into the locker rooms with a cell phone are what passes for show prep. I call that mailing it in. And the ratings reflect that other than the hard-core sports radio guys with strong allegiances to the Sox or Cubs, few are listening.

My favorite segment that Mac and Terry used to do was when they went around the country and talked to scribes (from the NFC North?), namely that crotchety bastard up in Minnesota, Patrick Reusse (sp?).
