Did my ears deceive me or did Murph just call his last black caller "Sambo"?

It's funny. My parents both said that Little Black Sambo was a story they both had to read in elementary school. My how times have changed. That would never fly today.

If Murph had accidentally called a white, Latino, green, or blue caller a politically incorrect name, I believe he would have made the same correction.

The question still stands: Tell me how you KNOW that caller was black???

I seem to remember a food chain similar to Denny's that was named Sambo's. They had a kid's menu with a maze on it where you tried to get little black sambo to the watermelon at the end. All of this is in the very hazy memory of my youth during family car trips so I may be recalling incorrectly.

Didn't the guy call from Harvey or Markham or Phoenix? The last I looked, those burbs are like 95% Black. But yeah I heard it too. One of my favorite lines in the movie Hollywood Shuffle was when Paul Mooney said "We cannot start playing the Rambo's until we stop playing the Sambos"

No, you are remembering correctly. I think they were nationwide, and they were a family-style restaurant off the interstates like Howard Johnson's. I remember we had a road map from them where there were "S" marks on there where "S stands for Sambo's."
I think they shut down in the early 70s.

You both are correct. We had two in Kankakee when I was a nipper. They did change their name in the early 70's.

So the caller said, "I RESIDE in Harvey, Markham or Phoenix?" He wasn't working there or visiting there or driving through? If a show host were to refer to a caller as a black gentleman without that caller identifying himself so, I believe he would be ripped unmercifully for it here on the board.

You are right KS, Joe, Joey.....Bob, Robert, Roberto. Murph does it all the time. White Black, Latino, green, blue makes no difference.

And again, how do you KNOW he was a black man???

Murph just apologized on air for the incident. I was not offended, nor did I think he did maliciously. That's why the thread is named "Ooops!"

I was just taken back because I was half listening while I was working. I heard him say Sambo and that caught my attention. Also, based on Murph's silence I'm quite sure the caller must have been black. That's all.

Little slip ups like that can get a host fired.

I would be very disappointed if there wasn't some show of discipline by WSCR. Mac gets 2 weeks in the stripey hole for calling someone a bitch. Murph should get something for letting this "slip." We've all seen little bits and pieces of what a turd Murph is from other little slips on his show, I wouldn't be too shocked if race relations neanderthal wasn't also on his business card. Can anyone refresh my memory as to the last time ol Murph had a black guest? "I'm not sayin'...."

I'm growing tired of Reason's guard-dogging of Murph, but I do believe this situation was entirely different.
It was a slip up. Mac was ticked off and he felt like he could take a shot at someone who opposed him.

I'm not saying he should be fired for this (there are a 1000 other reasons for that), but a day or 2 in the penalty box is more than appropriate for his "slip up". It's an inappropriate/offensive term and there's no place for it, especially considering the context.

But, after thinking about it, when was the last time ANYONE at WSCR got suspended? Didn't Mitch dole out suspensions @ ESPN? Wonder why no discipline @ WSCR?
