They all can't be Connor McKnight!! LOL

The most recent contest winner is a blogger, right? So they're 1-for-2 with on-air contests and I guess the jury is still out on that Buffoon guy?

I only ever heard her name, never heard one of her shows.

They never promoted the show, and I don't even know if she had a profile on their website. And no other hosts ever made mention of her. I found it weird. Almost like they wanted her to fail.

I found that very odd as well. You'd hear more mentions of "Score Values" then you would of her show or even her name. At least she was able to get some on air experience. She needs to do something other than sports...

Agreed. She was a contest winner. She should have had a small spot on each of the shows after her win and then some decent parts during the weekend.

My feelings are well known about the Score Search contest. They are fishing for the next Mike Greenberg rather than the next Mike North...except the next Mike Greenberg can already be found in an existing pile of resumes on Mitch's desk. The contest should be used to take a chance on someone.

I'm pretty sure she had her podcast up there. She must have because I sampled 10 minutes of it at one time.

I still think she wasn't given a fair chance. DOn't get me wrong, I don't think she was all that good. But never one fill in spot. Not one commercial. Not one mention from any other show on the Score. And if anyone ever heard her show, they were either her friend or happened upon it by mistake...

I think it was because she's black.

They gave the Ginger Midget a profile page, but Maya gets the shaft.

They gave her a crappy shift. She was like Sunday nights in the wee hours. Who is really listening then?

As for the fill in shifts, you never know if they offered and she turned them down or if it is based on seniority to bid on them and she got the shaft that way/.

That's because everyone at WSCR including Mitch realized that the first contest was a mistake & that Gavin was brutal. For once, Mitch makes a good personnel decision.

I only listened to a small sample size of Maya Gavin's show when it was on at Midnight instead of 2a due to transmitter maintenance a few months ago. I wish she was on at a more reasonable hour instead of 2a Sunday mornings as was the case the last several months to give a better opinion on whether she was good or bad at sports talk. I don't think that chance ever came to fruition for Maya since winning "SCORE Search 2".

Scorehead, I don't make this stuff up. The SCORE didn't give her much of a chance...Can't give a fair opinion when that happens.

The Score didn't give her a chance??? SHE WON A FUCKING CONTEST & WAS GIVEN A REGULAR AIR SHIFT!
There are hundreds of young broadcasting hopefuls that would love to have that chance.

Not really. Sometimes she was on and sometimes not. The time changed on occasion and it was never promoted....but believe what you will...

There isn't a radio show on the air after midnight that is promoted. Mitch knew the contest was a mistake & he was fucked for 1 year. What would you have done, paired Gavin with Bernsie?

I would have her fill in with another host a few times to see if there was anything there.

I'm not saying she was great or anything, but I think it's pretty fucked up to make a contest and pretty much set up the winner for failure. Just don't have the cotest at all...

The idea was to have someone host live & local sports talk in the wee hours of the morning not named Les Grobstein when they did the 2nd "SCORE Search". I'm not even sure that Maya Gavin had more than a 1 year contract when she won the contest 2 years ago. After all, that's how long the "LOOP Rock Girl" lasts on the other station...

Yeah, but Grobstein does like five or six hours a night, and it's between Usually Abbatacola and Mully & Hanley. The Maya Gavin show was bookended by Sporting News Radio, I'm pretty sure. It'd be SNR from, say, 10 or 11 to 2, then her for two hours, then back to SNR. That paints the mental picture of, like, someone commandeering an empty radio station while a night janitor looks on. Ivan's right. She was set up to fail. I'm not saying this because I was rooting for her--I think I heard all of one segment of her show, and it wasn't particularly good, like, at all--but because it's plain as day that the whole thing was not a good-faith effort to develop new on-air talent.

The premise of the contest was stupid to begin with--we're looking for someone to do a couple hours of overnight on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Why not just give the winner the whole overnight shift instead of just carving a spot out of SNR? Why not give Saturday late evenings when the Sox don't play? Why not Sunday afternoons? Because it would piss off the clubhouse to take those sweet Sundays-3-to-5 plums away from Mike Esposito?

If Mitch disliked her so much that he supposedly atoned for his error by burying her in satellite-bookended overnights, why did he let her win in the first place? I know Bernstein supposedly fawned over her at the auditions, but contrary to popular belief, Bernstein does not run the station, and in fact probably couldn't give less of a shit about PepsiMAX SCORE Search 2: The Half-Assed Search For A Half-Assed Overnight Host, so Mitch should've seen to it that someone better won.

Wild-Eyed Sinicalypsical Conspiracy Theory: this whole song and dance was just an effort to keep the equal-opportunity wolves from the door because there aren't many women of color on the radio doing sports or, as a matter of fact, much of anything, not even in a market as large and heterogeneous as ol' number 3. While I won't say the fix was in, they began with an end in mind, and they were clever enough to have the whole thing sponsored by Pepsi and farm out a bunch of remotes/live appearances so they could bill practically enough to offset the eminently redundant hire in the first place.
