According to Tim Baffoe.

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/08/22/ ... -sox-fans/

By Tim Baffoe-

(CBS) Some say it’s beating a dead horse. Some take serious offense at the accusation. Some immediately unleash their Napoleon complexes and divert to an irrational comparison to a team about nine miles away.

Whatever the response to the pointing out of you not showing up to games may be, let’s face it. You’re cheap, White Sox fans.

And you’re allowed to be cheap. But if you’re cheap, you’re not allowed to complain.

Attendance so far for the series against the New York Yankees has been a joke. Less than 28,000 for each of the first two games of the series and likely not much better for Wednesday night’s finale as the Sox look to sweep the boys from the Bronx.

The Yankees. Most historic franchise in American sports. Team with the best record in the American League. MLB hits leader Derek Jeter bearing gift baskets. You’ve heard of that team, right?

And the White Sox are in first place, if that wasn’t reason enough to fill seats with butts. But the butts remain in Barcaloungers. Doesn’t sound much like folks are appreciating the game.

Oh, right.

Jim Margalus over at SouthSideSox.com points out that “… Charging small-market prices doesn’t mesh with the desire for big-market prestige (and the prestigious fans who buy much more than a ticket), so the Sox are forced to put the cart before the horse and wait for their vision to be realized.” Maybe that’s true, and maybe the Sox will have a “let them eat cake” attitude toward their peasant fans who already lack bread.

If so, though, you fans who constantly bemoan your favorite team’s often little brother status, both locally and nationally, need to shut up. If you want the team to be treated like it is nationally relevant, you have to accept paying nationally relevant prices. You can’t have it both ways.

You can also take in a game without all the typically American slobbery, too. When I hear the excuse “I can’t afford to spend $100 at a game,” I always respond that I’ve never sat in a $100 seat at U.S. Cellular Field. The most expensive available seat on WhiteSox.com for Wednesday night’s tilt is $70, and that’s for a premium game.

“But I need beer and junk food!” No, you don’t, but did you know that you can bring your own food and into the park? There’s also the option of eating while tailgating in the parking lot. So the concessions excuse isn’t a valid one. You also don’t need souvenirs, grown-ass man who likes to wear jerseys. It’s a baseball game, not a carnival. And if a hot dog and pop inside the park for your kid breaks your bank account, you’ve made some bad life choices.

And don’t give me the parking prices complaint either. First, be happy the team provides parking. There’s also public transportation, ye who pride yourselves on a working-class reputation (which is actually inaccurate). Excuses—stop making them.

Embrace your cheapness instead. You aren’t allowed to complain about the way Kenny Williams conducts business, though, if you and your wallet are boycotting games. Williams has said that lack of attendance hinders his ability to put the best possible product on the field. His ability to makes impactful deals this season that have greatly improved the team is even more a testament to his quality as a general manager since he’s hamstrung by his own fanbase’s unwillingness to get off the couch.

This is a first place team that’s 24th out of 30 in attendance. Twenty-first in 2011. Damn economy, right? That same economy that has an underachieving Philadelphia team with the best attendance in the game and the team in Detroit—America’s own cute little Beirut—seventh.

So go ahead and pinch your baseball pennies, White Sox fans. But then stop feeling persecuted and underappreciated, and stop demanding management give you blood from a turnip year in and year out.

Money talks. Cheapness whines.

There was a similar complaint earlier in the season about lack of attendance at White Sox home games. Why Joe Sox Fan doesn't want to spend his hard earned money at U.S. Cellular Field is baffling, especially with the first place Yankees in town to boot. Ed Farmer was pissed the last 2 nights at the lack of bodies in the stands early on during the first 2 games of this series on The SCORE/White Sox Radio Network.

I've always been under the impression that if the White Sox are winning, fans will show up. I'm not sure if kids are already back in school or if there's a perception this Sox team still isn't very good after stubbing their toes to the inferior Royals in Kansas City.

Every article he writes he tries to think of what Bernstein would say, and then rewrite it in a 10x more dickish manner.

Appreciate the Game.

Since "The Kids Can Play" marketing Effort it has been the "tough Guy Act" at The Cell.

I am pretty sure Jerry has some stats to support this marketing angle, as I have heard him talk about the way they tried to clean up the park and make it a family place when they bought the team.

The variable he leaves out is that he is now on TV as much as anyone else and the persona of his team is partially shaped by the talking heads he has employed. Stone, DJ, Hawk and Farmer are this worst 4 in the game.

Fact remains they do have an issue and I dont think they have made a real attempt to change one of the biggest aspects of the team that I do think is under appreciated of how these guys depict the ballpark trip.

I am sure many will disagree, but the same people will not be able to offer anything up as an explanation for an obvious problem?

I think White Sox fans deserve a lot better. The chemistry between the team's radio & TV broadcast teams is sorely lacking. I was surprised Darrin Jackson lasted as long as he did on the TV side with Ken Harrelson, and I sometimes wonder what he & Ed Farmer are REALLY thinking on the radio side.

Traffic blows trying to get there...

I would not go to more Sox games if Len and Bob were the announcers....that thinking is ridiculous. It's like saying people would attend more games if their uniforms were lime green like the mascot.

The announcing has sucked since John Rooney left after 2005. Look at the attendance link I posted. Not much has changed...

If I were SCORE Program Director Mitch Rosen, I'd spend some of CBS Radio's $$$$ to get Dave Wills off the Rays' radio broadcasts and get him back to call play-by-play for his hometown team. Wills is from Oak Lawn, I met him once when the Sox were up the dial and he's a good guy. I'd shift Ed Farmer back to the analyst role, move Steve Stone back to radio like he did that one season, and try to reunite Tom Paciorek with Ken Harrelson on the TV side.

Look! If ESPN Radio 1000 can lure Chuck Swirsky back home to call the Bulls with Bill Wennington, why not?

I think it's pretty obvious what happened. They jacked the prices for the Cubs and Yankees and less people showed up. This is Business 101 shit. It really doesn't require heavy analysis. I'd like to sell window leads for $200 each. But if I priced them that way I wouldn't have any business. And I highly doubt Matt Spiegel and Tim Baffoe would be bashing my prospective customers over it.

The you have No clue about sports marketing. The broadcast is a 3+ hour advertisement! If a team fails to treat it as so, in lieu of retaining boring, angry old men, that is lost expense.

I agree with that. Broadcasters do matter. If the fan base hates them, it does hurt attendence.

Sox broadcasters are weird, angry, boring, shills, stupid or all of the above.

I'm talking about Ranger, Farmer, DJ, Hawk and Stoney.

I think the majority of Sox fans hate all of these guys.

I know of not one soul who would not go to a game because of the announcers.

It is a non-factor. At least amongst those with a functioning cerebral cortex.

It's a good $200-250 day for a family of 4. They did do a really nice job with the kids section. Part of their issue is they have pretty good competition with the other teams in town. I agree they miss an opportunity with the announcers for selling their product.

For the Yankees, Cubs, Tigers and Red Sox the Sox jack up the prices

You can go to a Royals or Mariners game for cheap. Sox have deals on these games or you can find season ticket holders looking to get rid of their seats for half price on craigslist or stub hub.

It matters. Broadcasters are PR guys. If you hate them, you won't go to games. I don't know the number of tickets they lose cuz of their broadcasters, but they do lose because of them.

Doesn't matter to me. I'll go to 5-10 games a year regardless of them, but I think it matters to a lot of people.

Then why do a lot of people credit Cubs fandom to WGN & Harry Carey?

Like bigfan said, it's an advertisement for your company
