It really is something how Chet was almost as big a star as Dahl or Brandmeier in 1991, yet eight years later he was reduced to doing pre/postgame on Fox Sports Chicago for a dreadful Hawks team. That's the impact the Score had.

He was a horse carriage driver as the automobile was invented.

GTFO North at his peak destroys Bores and everyone else. Who in Chicago Sports radio in the last 30 years has been a bigger star than Mike North?? that's right, nobody. Love him or hate him it's the truth.

North was just a wannabe mobster with a big mouth who knew some bookies. He was a bigger ratings draw because a bunch of Streets and Sanitation and Park District types like goombahs.

In terms of quality of output, peak Terry was better.

North made money through his loyal connections, not his ratings. His reputation far exceeded the number of listeners he garnered.

I don't know if the ratings numbers are around but I don't think that is true.

North was a one man bandwagon for the Score. He did everything he could outside of the four hours of his shift to make that station work, to the benefit of the others.

North was the only guy working without a safety net in the industry. He had one shot and he made the most of it.

The Score's ratings were not good for years. Well below what they pull even today. Having said that, part of the issue was listenership was marked in hand written diaries back then.

Mike did work his ass off going to church halls, bars and other places. But he was still largely an unknown commodity.

Boers was not however. He had thousands who had read his column for years, and MANY followed him to radio.

And Terry quit the Sun-Times, and his safety net to work full time at the Score.

Mike still had his hot dog stand at least.

Terry was the master of the double entendre. On Score stories Terry asks caller Bob to blow his horn. Terry says pardon the expression. And Mac with the many porn rerferences. Mac's guy was Tom Byron. Must of mentioned him 50x. And the many sound bytes from on air stuff. The only sound bytes from current stuff is Les putting his foot in his mouth. How can there be great sound bytes when everyone is pc petrified?

GD, but that does not answer the question I asked. The Monsters had a huge impact on the station no doubt. But in terms of entertainment and sports thoughts, I much preferred Terry. It sucked because HFC got cut off when the sun went down. The winters were a rough ride home.

North at his best is better than Terry at his best. Terry never could carry a show on his own.

Chet isn't even in the discussion. He gets props for what he did in the industry but the Score product diverged so greatly from Chet type radio that it drove him into irrelevance

They were like a transmission. North was a low gear to get it started, Boers 5th or 6th gear to get it really rolling.

I read Terry in the DH. He was gifted and a professional in the business. Mike North is the foul mouthed guy at the bar. It was part of what made the station great. There was a contrast in styles and thoughts. Much better than the Bernstein led cabal of SJW tinged group think and data driven obsessed Borg collective of thoughts.

Great description of why the station is no longer listenable, they've forgotten what made them unique. Used to have some very distinct differences between the shows with completely different personalities which love them or hate them, churned out hyperlocal and unique content that vastly differed from the national takes which used to be referred to as, "out of town stupid", now all the stations host simply regurgitate, "out of town stupid", thoughts minute after minute, hour after hour, and day after day.

The station has lost all credibility, "The thinking fans station", is really the "team approved takes", station, nothing differentiates the station from national shows, they have lost sight of what made them stand out and just put out the exact same content you can find anywhere.

The obsession with pleasing the SJW collective makes the hosts fear saying something, anything that may offend anyone.

I was never a fan of Terry's writing. Whenever I got done with one of his columns I always felt as if there was a paragraph that somehow got left out. Maybe that was the stuff he was saving for his book.

Agreed. I always thought Terry wasn't all that gifted as a writer. I never ever would go out of my way to read him.

He won the equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize for writing. In any case, I was a teenager when he was actively writing, so not exactly the peak of my life experience.

I have no recollection of Terry Boers as a writer.

Bernie Lincicome was my guy.

There's this whole legend around Terry as a writer that he was this diamond in the rough where time after time, instructors couldn't help but see something in him and encourage him to pursue his dreams. I don't know if he was the unwitting literary genius the legend makes him out to be. He was obviously pretty good if he made it as far as he did, but at least he made it as far as he did. Now you need a private school education or a law degree just to write for Imitation Deadspin.

The Score must have tons of hours of vintage Score classics. They need to have someone strictly going through the archives, and sorting them all out. Please don't destroy anything. Then, devote an hour show everyday to them. I've been listening to Score Stories with B & R and really enjoying the segment. Not everything will be a gem in the listeners view. But, it's so much better then the current stuff. There won't be any Score Stories added from this bunch of hosts and probably future hosts. Even replaying whole old classic shows would be better. This group can't even make transition interesting.

As for writers Terry was ok. But he had a lot of competition. I don't remember him towering in quality over the others.

Yeah, Bernie was a crabby bastard who hated everything about sports except Chris Evert but I mean come on, there's no comparison between his skills as a writer and those of Terry Boers, or really most of the sportswriters who have come through Chicago during my lifetime.

When did terry leave the Sun-Times? We were a trib family so Bernie was my guy too. Didn’t really start ready the times consistently until I worked at the board in 96. I think terry as long gone by then.

You have pushed this narrative several times even though you have said yourself that you rarely listen or only catch a random 15 minutes here or there. I can't accurately talk about any other show other than the afternoon show but within the last couple months, Parkins and Spiegel have been very critical of the Cubs, Bears, and Sox. They are definitely not giving the "team-approved takes." So can you give some actual examples of what you are talking about?

For two decades, Terry Boers has been displaying his creative, inquisitive skills on the sports pages in newspapers throughout the Midwest and on The Score – SportsRadio 670.

While Boers prides himself on his sense of humor, the flipside to his funny bone is his unabashed directness. “I am bizarre, twisted, and perfectly willing to hit even the most sacred of cows upside the head.”
A Northern Illinois University alum, Boers began his career as sports editor for the Sun Journal Newspapers in Lansing, IL. From 1973 to 1978, he was assistant sports editor for Star Publications, based in Chicago Heights, IL. He then worked as a copy editor for the Detroit Free Press from 1978 to 1980.

Boers left Detroit in 1980 to join the Chicago Sun-Times sports staff, where he covered the Chicago Bulls from 1982 – 1985, was a featured columnist from 1988 – 1990, and then covered a variety sports, until August of 1992 when he joined The Score. Boers has also appeared on several television programs, including “The Sportswriters on TV” and “Sportsfire,” both airing on SportsChannel Chicago.

Boers has won several awards for outstanding journalistic coverage, including the Peter Lisagor Award – considered among Chicago print journalists as the local equivalent to the Pulitzer Prize, and AP awards for column and feature writing.

Given all that he has done, Boers says he loves covering sports in Chicago. “There’s no city in the country with a greater fan passion and so little reward. The bumbling by so many makes my life easy.” “To be a sports fan in Chicago you need a great sense of humor. If you don’t have one, call me. I will surgically implant one for little or no charge.”

Boers lives in the Southwest suburbs with his wife and his four sons.

Not sure what your affiliation with the station is, but if you've read the posts here you must realize that most have given up on Parkins and have moved onto superior sports talk options.

Where is the next meeting of the DPFC (Danny Parkins Fan Club)? You really shouldn't need a very large venue.

So you’re just talking out of your ass with your narratives? Gotcha. And how does other people’s opinions about Parkins relate to my post? You keep saying that the Score gives team-approved, team-peddled messages and I am calling you on it. And all you can give is foolish nonsense. No wonder you like dumbass shows with stupid callers. It fits your mentality.
